Dangerous trend ... gas thieves

Gas is $3.92 on the west coast ... this is a dirty no good gas stealing trend that is going to cost someone their life.

Seems they have changed their tactics. I remember back in the 1970's having to buy a locking gas cap but looks like even that won't work this time.

And people who steal the gas only cause the prices to go up.

We need an international market where we can set a single price for all gas stations so they can't charge outrageous prices for fuel. It's a shame that people have gotten killed over gas in the past. I read about a shooting a few months ago in Arkansas (I think) over gas. Costed the young attendant his life and the man who did it is now stuck in prison all because he wouldn't pay for the gas.

I find myself seriously wondering how i can booby trap the underside of my car now.
I HATE theives. I would sooner have my car blow them to hell, then have someone steal from me. Yes, intentional mad max reference. Glad my car is parked in a gated community, but i know damn well if someone wants in, they'll find a way.

We need for governments to stop putting outrageous taxes on fuel.

I wonder what the price of petrol here per litre works out to in dollars.

*googles*

Wow, gotta love the hidden functionality on google :D

Pretty much all of the difference is taxes right?

Wolfehunter 04-24-08 05:31 PM

Ya I bought a lockable gas cap. Someone in my appartment complex was stealing gas. I found out when I was about to go on a road trip with an almost empty tank of gas. Man was I ticked off. Anyhow drilling into a tank.... How can you fight back on that one? You can't....:nope:

What? Do I have to sleep in my car with a shotgun now?:hmm:

Mostly, yes. (Actually, i don't know this for sure. I'm saying yes because it seems logical, can't think of any extraneous costs between supplying the US and Ireland)
One can see the rationale, though. America is much vaster than Ireland/Europe, and the public transport system is not as widespread, so the individual automobile has to have lower running costs.
Environmental implications are another consideration, that's where much petrol tax becomes Pigovian.

I expect you're right about that.

Yeah our problem is we have had nearly universal access to personal automobiles for so long, and we got them at a time when most of the countrys infrastructure was just being built, that just about everything here is laid out in such a way that having a car is an absolute necessity.

If they push Pigovian (thanks BTW for turning me on to that word) tax schemes on gas here and it'll quickly becomee torch and pitchfork time and our pols know it.

Trying to stay on topic here, but petrol prices have gone up to $2 a litre it now costs me $120 to fill it up (6 cylinda Capri 2 door) compared to around $70 before the price hike. So my car now sits in the garage and i walk more often into town.

Seriously thinking of converting my car to use LPG gas. Gas is still very cheap to run.

The best deterrent to prevent gas thieves

I have a plan ... take an old car you would have the wrecking yard come and get.

If you don't have one just ask anyone that has a lot of old cars in their yard if you can borrow one of his.

Save all of your pee for a week to pour into the old car's gas tank or have a barbecue for your buddies and everyone pee in the gas tank of your undercover car, right?

Then tow it to a street these theives operate on ... One mouhfull of the planted car's fuel would be a great payback. :know:
