Uk broadband companies tested
I wish I could find one for the US of A too:
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...stomers-ripped If I read that right, Virgin Media and Online UK are the top. -S |
Yup, likewise up here. ... although it's not hard to figure out that my "extreme high-speed" connection only delivers a % of the advertised throughput. The ISP's run great advertising though
|
I currently pay £25/month for a 20MB connection with Virgin (formerly Telewest)....if only I could believe it.
My speed checks often drop to between 13/16MB dependant on the time of day. |
Well we are coming up to crunch time and copper wire will be history. We will all need fibre optics. I hold out no hope here, as the cost will be placed on old muggings here. So I will say this before I have to pull the plug, great knowing you bye bye.
May as well get it over with as we are in a mess here in the UK. |

http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_ratings.php#
good site to rate UK ISP's I'm with ADSL24 (an entanet reseller) 'home 30' package http://adsl24.co.uk/broadband_home.php after moving from pipex who were bloody awful by comparison. Currently if I have any small issues then I use the isp's forum and the md and his underlings get right on the problem, they're very honest and approachable too. There are cheaper services, such as those with SKY or Virgin that offer phone tv and all of that nonsense, but you get what you pay for and I really hate the 'buy cheap, buy twice' consequenses of that kind of thinking. http://www.speedtest.net/result/259895497.png It varies a little, dependent on network traffic, but these guys don't port block or traffic shape to any serious detriment to my connection. Any other shortfall to speed is purely down to the condition of the network itself being able to handle a stable connectin to and from my local exchange. |
Not a bad site, but must be a little dated. It has Virgin XL package down as 10MB when it has been 20MB since June (ish) last year.

In Australia we got Telstra and so on.
There's been some broadband company dropping out, I think. They're the obscure ones. I'm using Telstra and their service... SUCKS :nope: Here's the speed test if you're interested to compare results :yep: http://www.speedtest.net/result/260445666.png We were planning to switch to another provider but it seems my area's not covered :x Since I've heard some good things about Optus. |
Australia is in the mist of having a major upgrade of it's communication network, it's an upgarde to having fibre to node, so that there is a major increase in speed for over 95 % of Australia's population.
The biggest bun fight is over who will build it. Telstra is the one most likly, but they want the right to charge what they want and not have to share it with other compeditiors |
That's true. I hope Telstra doesn't take it. Their service totally sucks. Some providers like Optus would be ok though :-? As long as they cover my area.

Figured I'd try that Speednet site too:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/261906987.png I'm quite happy with those ping times. -S |
darn, your ping time is faster than mine
