Contact Detected !

Just had to say that I love the level of detail in this game ...... Not sure if this has been posted before (new to the forum), but had to post it ........

Whilst closing in on a convoy, 2 of the destroyer escorts start closing in my general direction and I know for sure they've detected me.
How do I know for sure .....Well they told me !

I couldn't help reading the morse of their 'flashing lights' ( old habits die hard !! ) and they were sending " Contact Detected" :rotfl:.
Once safe, I switched to the external cam and all 3 escorts were sending the same thing. So as I'm down to my last 3 fish and the convoy is only small/medium merchants it's time to exit stage left ....... very quietly ...... and live to fight another day.

Now I've just gotta take more notice of those flashing lights in future ..... they could be telling me all sorts of useful stuff.

Cheers

I love how they valiantly keep sending, even as the mast dips below the surface :p That's dedication to duty!

Jap escorts communicating in English between each other? They make it so easy for you, now there's even no need to translate

AVGWarhawk 04-04-08 03:15 PM

Good Lord, I thought they were flashing, 'Drink more Coke'. :D

Quillan 04-04-08 03:21 PM

It wasn't "Send more cops"?

I knew they were signling each other, i didnt however, think the contents of the signal were real. Im impressed. :p

MonTana_Prussian 04-05-08 12:47 AM

Very cool! I wondered if the signals meant anything! Good to know.

Hmmmm....I will have to check this out. Being an ex RM, you never forget the code, just slow down a little.

MonTana_Prussian 04-05-08 09:16 AM

Being an ex EN,I can't read it!

I've just tried a couple of the default quick missions and at first glance it looks like the warships don't start sending any flashing light until they get a contact.
That contact could be you, or any allied surface unit, not sure about air units.
I've not seen them flash anything else but 'contact detected' ... but I'll be keeping a good watch out just to see :o

I tried 'Ambush in the Palawan Passage' a few times to see some different results.
If I just sat there very quiet, the whole convoy sailed right past me with no flashing lights ..... try it again and do something to make a bit of noise .... 'Contact Detected'
and the escorts start closing whilst the main body start to zig-zag.

By no means a thorough test, but it looks like if you see warships flashing .... they know your (or somebody else) is out there !

................ Oh yeah and it's also very easy to get distracted whilst reading that flashing light and then realise that the destroyer you had 'zoomed' in the periscope , is now no longer zoomed and just VERY close !

I'll have to check that out, of course my Morse is pretty rusty and not sure i will be able to understand it visually. I am only good on the sound. Awhile back I downloaded a Morse tutorial just to see if I still had it. I didn't do too bad but my old Master Chief wouldn't approve. I was in the AF but my job when I was in was mixed, mostly Navy. It would piss off some Navy folks that they were higher ranking and I was giving them orders since I was the Mission Controller for one of my tours. I was an E-2 at that time telling E-3 and E-4's the mission. I don't know why I am talking about this but talking about Morse Code triggered a moment of my history that gave a me a chuckle. There was a Petty Officer who didn't like the idea of me being you can supervisor of my group. It was me and another PO who were Mission Controller who were in charge of doing the mission and assigning various targets to 4 or 5 operators. Anyways, this PO gave me a hard time when assigning tgts so much so I had to talk to the Master Chief who was our shift leader at time. He told here rank doesn't mean **** in this career field due to the significance of the job or something to that effect. We had no problems after that.
Sorry for boring ya's, sweet old memories.
