Cell phones more dangerous than smoking. Yes, no?

I personally do note judge the risk increasinging or how strong link between brain tumors and cell phone radiation is, but that there is a link is something that I do believe since years. To hold an electromagnetic radiation transmitter close to your brain often and for long does not sound like a good idea in principle, does it.

Already in the early 90s, my mother was busy with collecting printed material showing the risks of transmission antennas on house roofs, because back then the house community of where my parents lived back then planned to allow a cell phone company to raise according antennas on their roof for a regular fee. It were Canadian and French studies, that much I remember, and they were so vincincing that even the most greedy people in the community decided to put theit health over the money, and the company's request was rejected without a single vote in their support.

The news is not really new at all, but it seems it is so unwelcomed that it gets successfully kept under the carpet since long.

Kids all through the 1950s and '60s held transistor radios to their heads, and seem to have survived. On the other hand, my cell phone time is very low, so I guess I don't have to worry as much. Unless, like smoking, it only takes once if you have the right genes.

Ha, its complete bull, you get a higher dose of EM radiation from watching (CRT) tv for 1hour than you would from a lifetime of cell phone use.

Most of the hoo ha about cell phone radiation comes from the media. People hear the word radiation and immediatly think Chernobyl, the simple fact is the human race had been surrounded by natural electromagnmetic radiation for thousands of years and we have survived this long.

If you worried about every little thing you would end up as one of those nut jobs that wallpapers their home with tin-foil or wears a tin-foil hat to block EM signals:doh:

Radios receive - they do not transmit. ;)

Thanks for the hoo ha, which actualy helps nothing. As far as I know the energy that is transmitted by cell phones does not compare to man made all-environment-radiation, but is much higher, also, the phone being the origin of it, in the immediate vicinity of the cellphone it is foucssed, or better concentrated. - A lasers energy may be harmless if its energy is used to transmit in a 360° arc or even in a round sphere -focussing the energy all into one needle-thin beam can burn your eyes, or even your skin. - Anyone here with real professional insight? the author of the study does not seem to be an unknowing dilletant, and seem to have earned plenty of medical and academic reputation. And as I pointed out by memory, french and Canadian studies aimed at the same direction even in the late 80s and early 90s. They are just aiming against a very strong business lobby, obviously.

EM is not a single thing that can be generalized about... if EM is so harmless.. try sticking your head in a microwave oven!
Some frequencies are proven harmfull.. some are pretty much proven benign.
I really dont know if cell phones are harmfull.. doesnt seem so unreasonable that they could be..

Of course my opinion could be biased because of exposure to certain EM pulses.. ie. I watched alot of 3-Stooges when I was young! :damn:

Or think of Radar. i vaguely remember that an incredible high number of maintenance crews for German and american SAM radar batteries stationed in germany, from the 70s and 80s suffered cancer in the lower abdomen and genitals. and this althoigh the system until today officially are rated as "safe". My memory pops up the number of 40% of the crews becoming ill, but I cannot swear on that number. It was kind of a scandal here in the early 90s. there also was one incident with a technician of I thiunk a HAWK battery, again in germany, he was almost grilled when stepping in front of the antenna which was assumed to be switched off. He died short time later.

Microwave ovens transmit at 2.4GHz and at much higher power than mobile phones and thats why it cooks food. The latest 3G phones operate at 2.2GHz but at a tiny fraction of the power that a microwave oven uses. GSM in the UK operates at 900MHz and 1800MHz. If you are worried about microwave radiation it's not just mobile phones you should be worried about. Wi-Fi operates at the same frequency as Microwave ovens (2.4GHz) and Wi-Fi transmitters are appearing in millions of locations around the world e.g. streets, pubs, McDonalds the list goes on. Do you use a Wi-Fi enabled laptop? Personally I'm not worried about it at all, there are far more important things to worry about.

I watch a program on this the other night apparently the cell phone brain cancer is a hoax. Your more likely to get brain cancer from being in the sun to long than from a cell phone. Or in other words impossible. Well according to them. I know one thing i use to get wicked headaches from old CRT monitors.

No doubt if it is ever proven beyond any reasonable doubt, it will be too late for countless numbers of unsuspecting victims and the multi nationals will have already prepared their defence against damages claims.

0.7 watts immediately next to your head - that is pure radiation constant. Cell phones are dangerous.

SOmeone mentioned a CRT - CRT's are shielded to direct those very frequencies out the side and back - not out the front. So that idea does not hold true. MPR ratings were developed in the early 90's and TCO ratings in the late 90's. Earlier monitors, maybe you might get some high rads there.

Be scared. :o

Very scared of soccer moms in SUVs yaking on the cell phone.:D

"As far as I can tell from the work so far," says Roti Roti, "the greatest hazard with cell-phones is driving a car while talking on one."

You have no idea how many of these 'moms' have almost killed me!!! They don't even look and just move over. This is the very thing that is getting cell phone bans during driving momentum. WA has now banned both text messaging and non-hands free cell phones with this going into effect in July. Cali - cell phones are banned. How many other states? I forget.

Banning the use of mobiles whilst driving was possibly the best law passed in the UK over the past 10 years http://www.psionguild.org/forums/ima...es/wolfcop.gif

Sorry, i guess my initial reply was a little arrogant, i live not too far from a cell phone mast and since the mast was errected ive had to put up with almost constant protests etc, from various groups claiming its a danger to a school (thats 0.5 mile from the mast).
These folks may have a valid concern but knocking on my door at 8am to ask me to sign a petition really isnt going to get me on their side.

To answer the thread`s question i dont think its anywhere near as dangerous as smoking, smoking is proven to cause cancer and many other serious health complaints whereas the majority of research conducted on the subject of cell phone radiation has yet to show any link between cell phones and increased instances of tumors.
