Sound of sinking ships question

Shouldn't I be able to pick up the sound of a ship sinking and breaking up on the hydrophone? I can 'fly' over close to a sinking ship with the free camera and hear the groaning sounds as a ship is sinking, but I can't pick that sound up on the hydrophone as the ship goes down.

So my question is, am I missing something or was this never in SH4? I'm coming back from a 3+ month break from SH4 and I thought I remember this being in the game...but perhaps I'm imagining things or the memory is failing :damn:

...running RFB, NSM, RSRD, PE2

...picking thru the sound files, I see Scufundare vapor_hyd is there and that is the sound I am trying to hear on the hydrophone, but I never hear it. I do hear the non hydrophone version when I move the free camera next to the sinking ship though.

I noticed the exact same problem the other day. I'm running no other mods, just testing sounds. I had never noticed this before now; but I suspect someone is going to tell us this is a bug since the beginning. :nope:

EDIT: Oh, I didn't test this yet, but I have one theory that the hearing range of that sound might be limited in distance. How close are you to the sinking vessel when listening? I'm going to set up a test where I am right on top of it and see if i can hear it.

I was within 700 yds of a sinking Maru the other day. I listened on the sonar but could hear nothing. However, the green light came on matching the bearing of the ship going down but that was all I got.

There is something odd about the sound of SH4. I don't get a sound of sinking on the hydrophones, but I do with the free camera. As far as I remember, there's no sound of ships burning either, even if you pull a 'Tales of the Unexpected' with the camera, but pools of burning fuel oil do have a sound.

MONOLITH 03-31-08 05:06 AM

Yeah. I get the green light too. But not the sound.

Really unfortunate, because I'm attempting to do a lot of playing with sonar only type strategies and hearing a vessel going down plays an important role.

There's 2 sounds for anything, the one you hear when you are in freecam, bridge, periscope etc. and the one you hear via hydrophone. My guess is that SH4 doesnt have the hydrophone sound for sinking ships.

maybe increasing range in SH3.SDL helps:hmm:

If there isnt sound for the hydrophone, you wont hear it. Doesnt hydrophone mute out any other sound except the ambient sound for the station and whatever you hear thru the hydrophone, which, AFAIK, only picks up sounds that are made for the hydrophone.

EDIT: I just checked, and there is infact the hydrophone sound for the sinking ships, so that's not the case.

Same problem here!
I can't hear the sound of a sinking ship with the hydrophone. But if something on the ship explodes (sometimes when it sinks deeper) I can hear the sound, also when the ships fuselage hits the seabottom.

I'm not using any mods right now.

I wonder if this might have something to do with the realistic sound travel option?

I have heard it on several occasions. The sounds I noted were the bulkheads creaking and then poping and I have heard the impact sound on the seabed. I was abot 3000-5000 yds when I heard them. Really creapy sounding.

I had wounded two freighters a small and a medium sized one. I waited around for the escorts to leave then finished them off with the deck gun. Right after they started sinking my sound man notified me of approaching warships so I dived and was manually opperating the hydrophones and like you guys have mentioned I saw the green light indicating something so I turned up the volume and thats when i heard it. Oh, I was also using headphones and had the music volume turned to 0. Other times Ive turned it up and not heard it at all. The above incident occured in the South China Sea early 42. Note I am running stock SHIV no mods.

Im pretty sure it has to do with range and conditions of the water. If you are in deep water and at short range the vessle may fall outside the arc of detection pretty quickly before it gets to a depth where the bulkheads start to go and depending on the depth to the seabed it may take a while before it gets there and you can hear the impact. Remember the hydrophones are not omni-directional, wouldnt be much good if they were.

Like MONLOITH, I've been trying a more sonar-centric approach lately (trying to do an early sugar boat career mimicing early war tactics) and this sound needs to be able to be heard.

I've been from 1000 yards to 5000 yards to the sinking target and at periscope depth all the way down to 200 feet at various times and not heard this sound while at the sonar station. Like everyone else said, the green light comes on, but no sound. I'm pointing the hydrophone head right at the sinking ship and hearing nothing. Switch to the free cam and 'fly' over there and I can hear the sound.

I do have realistic sound travel on, maybe I'll try turning that off to see if I pick up anything.

Realistic sound travel off didn't fix it. I guess this will just be one of those mysteries.

I think is a bug introduced in 1.4 or 1.5

I clearly remember earing al the cracking sounds through the hydrophones with 1.3
Would be interesting to compare both 1.3 and 1.4/5 version of the sdl file

Good Post!!!!

Iv'e been wondering the exact same thing myself... :hmm:

Many times that's the only indication a captain and crew had of a torpedo hit and sinking vessel when they were below periscope depth (the sonar/audio indication).

This really needs addressing IMHO, especially for those who play with external views off!!!
