You're making these for a submarine game so we can look at them? Make them for an airwar game so we can actually use them!:rotfl:

Really, this is something I've never heard of, or at least not remembered. Looks like a cool idea. I look forward to seeing them in the game.

In a perfect world, if your u-boat were sunk or scuttled near enough to one of these rescue buoys, it would be wonderful to mod into SH3 such that, if any of your crew makes it to a buoy survived, and you could then have them reassigned to a new boat to carry on the fight and keep your career going.

Otherwise it is still a great "atmosphere" mod that increases the realism. This is a very good one on your part, privateer. I doubt more than a handful of kaleuns here even knew about these buoys.

It makes you wonder, with all the attention to battles and major weapons platforms, just how many more of these minor technical marvels have been forgotten.

I'm sure a team of sim programmers could spend a solid decade just creating that much detail, where the weapons and support technology of the world during WWII is accurately portrayed.

Maybe by then we'd have desktop computers with the horsepower it would require to render it. :p

They will make nice additions to SH4 also.
They could be used to do rescue missions.
:yep:

I think it would be great to see them in the game, also the posible uses in SH4 would definately be something to look forward too. :D

These remind me of the film "We dive at dawn" staring the great John Mills, star of many British war films.

In that film they use one of these rescue buoys as an intrical part in the plot line. Be great to see it in the game.

I think in the Pacific war US subs were heavily used to rescue downed air crews, espcially when the big b29s started bombing the home land, they would "land" in the China sea, the nearest US sub would be radioed to there position and look for them.

on a personal note...Privateer, 82nd Airborne? Very nice, Highspeed soldier, ever make it out of the plane on a real combat jump, like the few they do nowadays, mainly for show, did u get ur air assault pin or were u stricly a jump boy? Where did u get that CIB? And you have ur pathfinder badge tooo omg thats really highspeed right there, r u still in, try to get ur HALO badge, my buddy does Seals and he got dropped from that school. I know that the 82nd were heavily used in the mountains of the "stan" i wonder y when we have a perfectly good 10th mountain division being sent to Iraq, but then again some information is classified when it comes to troop deployment hahahaha

A lot can be done with the SDK, but dont count that it will be released thought as SH4 uses the same Engine. so its still a nice dream, but reality is what we have now..but I must say a lot has changed and they pretty much brought the sim to a next level:up: great work by them modders

Rescue 'Buoys'.

Hi Everybody,
Once again, an interesting topic. These were not so much buoys as moored rescue boats. Once inside, the survivors had access to radio food and water, medical equipment and blankets. They were only meant for aircrew so were not very big.
A disadvantage was that E boats used to tie up to them and wait, silent and invisible to radar, for East Coast convoys. Our air/sea rescue launches used to visit them in case there were survivors on board. Incidentally, I lived through the war, and still do, on the East Coast, quite a busy area!!
Cheers,RR
