Enemy is pinging us

Hi kaleuns,

Newbie needs help here :)

When i get this "enemy is pinging us" message, does that mean that he's pinging in my general direction or that he located my sub?

Subsidary question, what is the advantage of a VIIC compared to a VIIB. VIIC just appeared on my sub upgrade screen, but the description coming with doesn't show any real advantage compared to my VIIB (october 1940 btw, 10th patrol, 1st career, just moved from 1st to 2nd flotilla in Lorient).

Thanks for your help.

Sadly, I've played this game for years and I still don't really know the answer. My latest opinion is this - if they've gone after one of your decoys, and they're pinging it like hell, you get the message that they're pinging you. But don't run in that case - just listen to the hydrophone - if they're not on an attack course towards you, then don't make any noise - just hold tight. If you haven't blown any decoys, then he's pinging you.

It means they have a pretty good track on you. If you play inside your sub, you can often hear faint pinging as they look around for you. But when the guy announces they are pinging you, the pinging really picks up in intensity.

Main advantage of the VIIC is its future upgradeability, particularly the snorkel becomes available for the C but not the B. Different conning towers with varying configurations also become available for the C but not the B. Also the C can get underwater faster.

Hi, welcome to the comunity!
Yes! i confirm, when your crew starts saying that enemy is pinging you, it means that enemy has found you and is tracking your route, until he doesn't loss you (because of dept, or your bolds launched, or green crew on DD..).
In fact, if you pay attention, just some seconds before that sentence is said, the pinging becomes just a bit more loudly.. it means that the pinging beam from DD is in your direction!

bye!

When they are pinging you. hope for the best. Chances are good that on the next run, an escort will dump DC on top of you.

When it does, go to flank speed. then silent with 5--10 degrees rudder. Chances are reasonable that you will sneak away.

Main thing--don't be where the DCs explode.

That's something i've never quite gotten the hang of. When I know the DD is nearly on top of me, I kick the engines to flank and order about 20 degrees rudder and dive 10-20 meters (if possible)... but I always screw up when I'm trying to figure out how long to keep the engines at flank. Too short and DC's will kill you, too long and they'll pick up on you again and swing around for another pass. Takes alot of finesse to get just right.

It's not easy trying to evade a Destroyer that has a bead on you. It is a "sweaty palms" type of feeling.

In the German version of the game they say "Der Feind hat uns in der Ortung", which means something like "The enemy knows where we are". So I guess the interpretation of this is really, there is a good chance that the enemy has got a contact on us. Fair enough, as actually you could never 100% know, what the guys up there know or think to know.. Therefore, take the "They are pinging us" as a serious warning sign that thing might get loud around you...:88):shifty::smug: this sequence of smileys mean that you got away this time!

The answer is no

AFAIK it does not necessarily mean he has you pinpointed but merely an indication he is actively searching in your area/vicinity.

In the decoy scenario......they can and at times, will lock on to the sound being emitted, just as they can with your sub.

On many occasions I have launched a decoy and watched escorts DC the crap out of it whilst I'm sneaking away at a sprightly one knot.

Yea - I suspect this is the case.
