Sticky petition
Posted by swdw:
I know Neal cleaned up the stickies because he thought it was getting too much, but the SH4 community thread has a lot more. TMO nad RFB are stickied, but there are a few more that really should be up there too. Although it may seem more cluttered, the benefit to the community vastly outweighs that drawback. So I'd like to petiion the admin to allow the following to also be permanently stickied for as long as they are under development: S3D editor RSRD campaign Krillers ROW/PE W-Clears environment. That cover the most often used and continuosly updated mods that are used by a vast majority of players. |
I was wondering if this'd come up!
I admit, my cleanup was a bit of an experiment, so I have my eyes/ears entirely open here. If a (noteworthy) number of you think we need all the major mod stickies back - will do! :) |
I voted "Who Cares?", but don't get me wrong: my real vote is not listed, and that is "No Opinion."
I've seen that Mods Lists tend to get old. Things change and don't get updated. On the other hand, popular threads tend to stay at the top anyway. So I guess my real opinion is "Who Knows?" |
To be honest, I really dislike stickies, mostly because they are used for the wrong purpose. In my opinion, archive/locked threads, threads that are important but not posted in regularly, are the only candidates for stickies, and I wouldn't stick more than 4 or 5 max. Too much stickies = clutter, and I have to scroll more than half a page down to new threads.
In reality however, threads that are posted in on a regular basis are stuck. I really don't see the point in that as they tend to stay on the first page anyway. Even more annoying is that when a new thread is posted, if it is deemed important it is quickly made a sticky. The result is that I don't see it, because 99 out of 100 times I scroll past the stickies... This is how I missed Ducimus' great thread on the Pacific war until last night, and it happened to me before with other threads. Now, S3D has never been made sticky, yet it's a thread less talked in compared to the major mods. Now I may be biased (:rotfl: ) but this is exactly a thread I would stick if I were a mod, since alot of people may need it yet have to look for it a couple of pages back. That said, I could care less myself, I'm fine with just a link in a summary thread like it is now. I use bookmarks, and sometimes the 'subscription' feature of this board anyway... ;) I'm gonna have to shoot myself in the foot here, and say 'no'. |
I found it most useful to have the major mods stickied. Things under development tend to get a fairly constant bump simply from the traffic going to their threads and the discussions taking place there. It was certainly useful however to have ROW/TM/RSRD/RFB front and centre given how crucial a mixture of these are to having an enjoyable game.
My suggestion would be to have a subforum for [REL] mods, and a subforum for [WIP]. [TEC] and general modding discussion threads. That way we would have a fairly up to date repository of released and working mods, rather than a partial list thread of mods and links (which can never be 100% complete). |

Which is why I'm ambivalent on the issue. I can see both sides :hmm: |
I voted Yes (which, incidentally, gave the poll results a pretty effect of one vote per option! :D). I admit I had serious problems with the "all in one heap" approach of the forum layout in the beginning, but I'm (sorta) getting used to it. Stickies for major mods sure help, especially newcomers.

Yes!
I voted yes, but with changes.
The major mods that most, a) either use or b) are steered to when they ask what mods are recommended should be at the top. Also, a thread with links to all the models and skins that have been developed is something most players (I think) keep a regular eye on. I know I am constantly looking for new skins on the SH3 and SH4 forums. |
Personally, I don't think we need a huge list of stickies if we have an updated mods list. Seriously, if we want to follow a thread or just have quick access to it, I think that's what they make bookmarks or thread subscriptions for.
|
YES! We need
a limited number of them sticked, I was surprised how once ROW went to page 2 when the SH4 "add on/holdout guys :o " ;) hit the forum with 30-40 posts in a short time. hehe you guys are welcome here:up:
