GATO AA Gun Bug

Using quad core (4 x 2.40ghz) pc with 3gb ram. GeForce 8600 GS 256MB RAM

Having completed several patrols I was "awarded" a brand new GATO - wish I hadn't bothered. That same old AA gun encased "in a tin can" bug of SH2 and SH3 (PA) is still there. How the hell am I supposed to shoot down enemy aircraft when I cant even see my target for tin walls!! :damn:

I have patches 1.1 and 1.2 from Ubisoft installed.

Also, another bug, smoke on the water (and fire in the sky-Deep Purple song!!!) when there is no fight, damage or sinking. Just appears as you are motoring along.

OK then - is there a "fix" out there ???

Seen. How on earth did they manage to use that damn thing with such a restrictive arc of fire. It would have been a complete waste of time having it aboard.

Another query: I didn't realise just how many aircraft the Japs had in the area of Phillipines & Guam - every one of them has been on my tail since entering the area. Is it normal in SH4 to be constantly under aerial threat? It's so intensive, its hardly worth leaving port!

You could install the latest patch (1.4) or even the add-on (1.5 that includes the 1.4).

1.2 is going to be an year old soon.

Doesn't help, I have all the patches and the problems persists.
Its very annoying.

Major Johnson 03-13-08 08:37 AM

So, you're saying the number of planes is annoying?? If that's the case, I suggest trying one of the mods. like TMO or RFB. I do believe they may have cut down on the amount of planes you encounter.

I recently played the first stock war patrol, Hunt For Wounded Bear, and after sinking a lowly freighter, I too encountered plane after plane after plane, day after day after day. Quite annoying I must say. I can see maybe, the rest of that day or even the next few days, they're out there looking for me?? But like a week later, I'm in a totally different area, and still from morning to night the planes show up, as soon as I break the surface. I wound up submerging, going at 1/3rd speed the batteries only lasted until 1500 hrs then I had to just sit there until dark, surface, recharge. I thought the batteries at slow speed could last for 24 hours?? I hardly think all those planes are a true depiction of what it was really like.

The only mods I'm running is ROW graphics/sound.

I was watching Destination Tokyo last night and when they got attacked by two Petes (float planes) they used the AA gun and also a Ma Deuce (.50 Cal), which they mounted to the bridge wall (bulwark/gunnel). Range of fire still looked pretty limited, but for movie purposes the planes conveniently stayed within the arc of fire of the .50, which was able to shoot fore, aft, and on the starboard side. The boat in the movie had the bathtub structure.

I re-read my original post, its none too clear. If any of you are in a GATO, take the AA gun and try and spin. You will go through the wall to the other side whilst the gun is blind. The total area the gunman has to operate in, he cannot spin anywhere! All he can do is fire aft.

Are 1/3 and Slow the same in the game? If the batteries last one hour at flank and 24 hours at slow, the in between settings should get you something...in between.

@ Red Devil: how do the AI gunners do when they're shooting. I personally don't find it realistic for the captain to be firing the guns anyway.

There is a fix for that made by somebody... i ahve not that problem... but problem is into stock game disregarding patch you use, almost up to v1.4 i am using... i used the modder instructions to made it on my own files, may be changing some settings...i cant remember well, i always personalize any mod to my taste.

Let me see...

Redwine 03-13-08 12:03 PM

Here what i have stored...are two diferent methods, one by Panthercules and a second one by DyingCrow... one uses the MiniTweaker program and the second SH Editor, not sure wich one i am using... and if the settings are exactly those described here under... any way i can share my file with you if you want, but i am not using the most common Camera Tweaks...

Here what i stored :

The AA gun view is broquen in some subs, when you aim at side, your face goes out of the Bathube wall, the
conning tower wall and it obstruct you aimin and sight view.

The trick is to move you point of view.

Method 1 :

by Panthercules

The fix to get this was very simple - just use Minitweaker on the cameras.dat file to change the
CameraParams Clipdistance settings to 0.45

(I did it for both dropdowns - "AA20mmPortGun" and "AA20mmStarbGun" - not sure if that's really necessary or not).

At the stock/previous settings of 0.1, the bathtub wall blocking view was there, but with these new settings,
it's not.

Method 2 :
#######

by DyingCrow

i found a fix to this issue, and seems somewhat simple. this is done with the S3ditor here.

steps:
-load the cameras.dat file
-expand 276:node (starboard gun)
-click the 288: node (starboard gun 1)
-on the offset fields, on the z field type 0.01 (instead of 0)

-expand the 294:node (port gun)
-click the 306:node (port gun 1)
-on the offset fields, on the z field type 0.01 (instead of 0)

this works like a charm for me, however dunno if theres any side affects. but the damn bathtub disappears for sure

the higher the value, the more you stick your face up the gun. at negative values, you will see a guy holding the gun (whoever he is), and you will see him clipping the tub wall. seems like its a bit tight in there.

may work with the 37mm aa gun, but havent even got a hold on one.

have fun.

Proper use of AA guns

* Prop for photos sent home to girlfriend: hero boyfriend defends boat!

* Hang onto it while taking a bath in the bathtub.

* Good substitute for reveille in the morning. Rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat!

* Accentuates turbulence behind the boat so when you do that high-speed knuckle turn while avoiding, it leaves a big knot of turbulence to fool enemy sonar.

* Gives crew members something to clean and oil.

* When the barrels heat up you can cook a steak on it.

* Shooting sampans and junks

I did anti-aircraft training in a little toy Type II U-Boat for Wolves at War last night. My trainer told me that the crash dive and surface evasion techniques were being taught on a training submarine without any AA gun. If during my career I found myself with a submarine equipped with an AA gun I was to do the exact same thing as I would do last night. AA guns were considered useless against actual aircraft and only were used as a last resort in a desparate situation. I couldn't have said it better myself!

Maybe the bathtub is to discourage you from using the gun, forcing you to do the right thing!

Engine speeds

HI,
No Sailor Steve, Non of the engine speeds are the same. They are all a percentage of Flank and can easily be set to whatever you want. Open the submarine folder, select a boat and open .cfg. Here you can make the changes to various things including engine speed. I altered mine so that Standard equals 10 knots, that way I get maximum range without ever running out of fuel. I use 2/3 for patrolling.

Yes, 1/3 speed is slow in the game. Only silent running is slower. The batteries do not last 24 hours at 1/3 (slow) in the game. That was a historic fact I had seen posted in another thread.
