Question about the Narwhal Class

Were the Narwhals mainly used for transportation due to their size? I'm on my third patrol in one, and so far I've delivered 19 tonnes of supplies to US troops and delivered two spies to their destinations.

The things take so long to dive, too :dead:

CCIP 03-12-08 10:34 AM

They were, depending on the point in the war that they were in of course. That was a smart move by the Navy - I think as Argonaut's unfortunate case shows, boats of that size weren't cut out for convoy attacks so much.

19 troops though? A bit too few for a boat that size! :p
They could carry as much as 110 troops on a raid.

Here's one of interest:

19 tonnes of supplies, not 19 troops ;)

And, wanna hazard a guess as to what my boat's called?

CCIP 03-12-08 10:46 AM

Oh boy! Better stay out of dem convoys

Hey, how about a screenshot? I haven't tried the Nautilus yet. I definitely appreciate the idea behind it, but I'm kind of hoping that a "real" Nautilus can be modeled by someone - my understanding is that the current one is basically an ersatz kitbash from other boats...

Kapitan_Phillips 03-12-08 11:14 AM

Sure thing. I love how the guys you're dropping off are sat on the deck :rotfl:

It is. I did my best to make it unique, but 3d modeling isn't a skill i posses, so i had to do the best i could with what i have.

And yes, it dives SLOW. I also did my best to make sure it behaved as a narwhal class would have (err in theory anyway, since i dont think anyone REALLY knows since they were so few in number and are all but "extinct")

edit:

And as i recall, the first couple months of the war i scripted regular patrols. After that, its all special ops. If one wants to do alot of spec ops, the narwhal is th boat to grab. After your orginal mission is complete - you can always hunt for shipping. ;)

That's certainly a good thing about the Narwhal you added, not only for historical accurancy but also to give an option to players who want to do a lot of those

If we ever get one modeled [from scratch], I remember that they had two 6" inch deck guns installed on them. If you like slugging it out on the surface, it's a fun boat to play with.

CCIP 03-12-08 01:19 PM

Aaahhh, okay. I see the model now - it looks to me most like the Argonaut actually (the raised gun deck on the Nautilus/Narwhal is absent, but the in-game boat definitely resembles Argonaut pretty closely). It'll definitely do for a generic V-boat.

Makes me wonder though. We've got people working on Atlantic U-boat models, we've got people working on nuke subs - when you got a perfectly appropriate (and sorely missing!) class of boats that's needed for the Pac operations and no modeler has stepped up yet. :( There's even a campaign for it now in TM, all we need is an accurate model!

Maybe I ought to post a call for that in the mod forum :hmm:

how did u get that sub?

M. Sarsfield 03-12-08 02:03 PM

If I remember right, I think you can specifically ask for it when starting a career. I took one out a few times from Pearl. You'll have to play with the drop down menus when starting a new career.

It's part of a mod, which I think has been incorporated into one of the supermods - probably RSRDC.

Ducimus 03-12-08 02:07 PM

I made it with a little help. Then gave it to everyone. So it should be in just about any large mod of your choosing. That and the Tench.

Classes needed, but left out.

I was very desappointed that the developers chose to leave several good boats out fo the game.

Narwhal class----in this case a good model of it. the one we have is fun to use and i enjoy the idea of it, but i wish i had the modeling talent to put it together.

Catchalot class---totally ignored even by modders

Mackerel class---"Modern" S-boats, even though they didn't fight in the Pacific, can you emagine having a coastal boat armed with Mk 14 and later Mk 18 torpedos. These boats were equiped with the same fire control equipement as a fleet boat. They also had all the advantages of being a coastal boat. Theuy were actually faster underwater then the fleet boats

Tench class---nice to have in the game. I enjoy the Tench. Great boats that could carry more torpedoes then the Balao. 28 compared to 24. the modders have had to do what the developers should have done in the first place, put this boat in the game with a striking visiual model. Thanks modders for my favorite boat.

also i would have loved to have seen these British boats:

S-class
T-class
A-class

Continuing CinC's thought, I'd like to run into more allied forces, include subs, in general. Not everything that I see should I have to shoot at or avoid.

Would this be an easy addition to RSRDC?
