Help!: Inconsisten performance issues
 
Ok, I hope some around here is able to help me, cause I'm running out of ideas.

I used to be able to play Silent Hunter without too many problems, at an enjoyable frame rate that was good enough to not notice any lag under almost any circumstance.

However, since a couple of weeks ago, I've been getting a lot of erratic slow downs on my computer. It's not that the game runs slow, it's more like it runs fine and fluid and then, all of a sudden, whitout an apparent reason, it'l turn into a slide show even though there's nothing going on in the game. Even the mouse and keyboard become very unresponsive. To make matter worse, the CPU usage isn't even showing too heavy at these moments, so what gives?

But here's the thing: the same is happening in Oblivion and Medieval II kingdoms, games that use to run pretty good in my system. I can understand not being able to play a game right from the beginning, but not being to play it after a long time of being able to do so?!?! it makes no sense.

I've made no hardware changes at all. I just can't figure it out. What drives me nuts is that it can run these games beautifully for times and then suddenly staggering and lag big time with no apparent reason.

I would suggest two possibilities; You may have a RAM stick that is going bad and causes intermittent slow downs when it fails. Another possibility would be your virus protection program running an automated full system scan during game play.

I'd also suggest checking your hard drives, when the games you play start to slow down listen to see if you can hear the drive motor speed changing or the head moving erraticaly.

I had 2 320GB SATA drives in my PC and it seems i had a very similar issue to you, a week after the issues started one drive failed and the other is on its way out now so no SH4. both drives under a year old at that, SATA :down: IDE :up:

I'm guessing the hard drive also. The only time my game starts to act up is the hard drive is working on something. Usually an update or virus scan. Next time it starts grinding to a halt, see if your drive is active. If so, find out what program is firing up.

try running SPEEDFAN in the background and then shell out when it acts up and check system-wide temperatures. this sounds like a textbook overheat.

if it is heat:

1. ram heatspreaders need to be replaced (they're not making enough contact)
2. harddrives need their own fan(s)
3. GPU heatsink/fan might need to be replaced or simply reset with new artic silver grease.
4. ditto CPU
5. your northbridge/southbridge fan is failing... replace it with a 3rd party chipset cooler.

To me, it sounds like something is running either a system scan, or an update. You don't have scheduled virus scans or defrag sessions setup, do you? Or perhaps a daily check for updates on one of your other programs.

It could be heat related, but I would think that your symptoms would be more along the lines of the game freezing up on you completely.

Just outta curiousity, when it slows down like that, try Alt-Tabbing out to the desktop, then back in. Lemme know if that works, 'cause I'm working on a theory.

Ok guys, thanks for the replies... I'll start running through the different options.

On the bad RAM posibility, what vista, or vista compatible utility can I use to check it?

I'll try the other options in the meantime.

Edit: Ok, this is weird, Alt-tabing out and then back into the program fixes the problem for a few seconds or minutes, but not always. Curioser and curioser.

Wooohoooo!!!! my computer's broken :rock:

Well, actually I'm not glad that my computer's broken, but it is, which means that:
1) I wasn't losing my mind.
2) I now what's wrong with it, ergo it can be fixed

that speedfan utility coupled with the alt-tabing tip proved golden. I can actualy see my system heating up just before it begings to lag, at which point I alt-tab out to give it a break, see it cool down, and go back to SH with no problems until it heats up again. (which is pretty darn fast)

I'll try a good clean up job of all my computer first, and see if that helps. If not, I'll follow the advice given for dissipating heat.

I think this will do it, but I'll let you guys know what happens just to share with others on the results.

All the above possibilities make sense to me. Does it happen consistantly? Can you narrow it down to certain times, where the autoupdates or auto defrag would come into play. Or can you narrow it down to an amount of time (doesn't have to be exact) if it happens after you have been playing for x number of minutes than it sounds like a heat problem.
Do you have a fan on you video card? If not does it get good circulation?

There are memory testing programs available, but one thing you have to be aware of, they put your memory "to the test". If it is starting to fail it probably will when you run the test.

As for the cpu usage not being too bad at that time, if the fan is not getting good contact with the cpu it can overheat very quickly. I checked your specs to see if you had an intel because they throttle back as they overheat, but it's amd.

That's the problem with these great inventions, when something goes wrong it isn't hard to fix, just hard to figure out WHAT to fix. Jot down some notes on when it happens, how long you have been playing the game. If there was a lot going on in the game at the time, etc. May help to narrow it down.

Another thing people don't think about is cleaning the fans, the gather dust quite rapidly and they need to be cleaned.

SPEEDFAN is a SIM'ers best friend!

what was overheating? the graphics chip? the CPU? both? does your RAM have metal heat-spreaders on them? Might as well do a full retrofit if you're "going in."

you can get very good/inexpensive heatsinks these days. Be sure to get Artic Silver 5 thermal grease. Don't use the stock compound, clean it off with qtips and 90% rubbing alcohol.

here's a cheap solution that I know, from personal builds, will destroy your SPEEDFAN readings:

take screenshots of the SPEEDFAN charts before and after installation, watch your temps very closely to make sure everything went well. Thermal grease needs to be burnt in: 24 hours of high-temps followed by complete power-off for 2 hours. about 3 reps. use PRIME95 to burn the CPU and SH4 to burn both. Monitor temps!!! You might need more case fans as these new heatsinks will move a lot of hot air and you've got to get it out of your case pronto.

* push-pull is the latest in CPU cooling. Fan #1 sits towards the front of the heatsink blowing back towards your main exhaust and Fan #2 sits opposite Fan #1, same flow direction. These big heatsinks can actually get hot-pockets of trapped air without push-pull config. Fan #2 should be practically touching your main exhaust. If you have side-panel fan(s), you may actually want to REVERSE them to suck air out instead of the standard blow air in.

These monster coolers need more case-exhaust--they make their own cold air, believe you me.

say goodbye to heat issues.

Your be amazed at what a simple full defrag can do to a PC, i use Disktrixs Ultimate Defrag and have it always running in the background turned off when gaming otherwise shes continuously running. Since running this program my PC acts like if shes just had a reformat. After installing uninstalling software your pc tends to drag its feet whether it be working in MS word or gaming the tiredness is showing. Plus the softwares uninstall feature doesn't always do the job properly so a defrag running with the odd ultilities cleanout keeps the PC in top shape. If issues still persist then its either a nasty malware or hddware problem or even an update of the video card drivers can help.

Kinda funny when someone is so excited that their computer is broken! :lol: Glad you found the problem so quickly. And walrusbomb is giving you good info, go for the artic silver! And when you clean off the old stuff make sure you get it all. Otherwise you will have gaps between the cooler and the cpu and that will make it worse than it is.
And walursbomb (Love that name:rotfl:) also asked if it was the cpu that was overheating. Check it out, I find that the newer game tend to rely more on the video card (GPU) while the older games put more strain on the cpu. so it may not be your cpu. And a lot of video cards don't even have fans on them and the heatsink is on the bottom...duh...heat rises. so if you don't have good circulation or a fan blowing on the heatsink, it heats up quite quickly.
But whichever component it is, it should be a fairly easy fix. Good luck, keep us posted....I see we crossposted, you posted at 2:30 while I was typing info and posted at 2:33, can't get any closer than that.

Ok, here's an update:

I opened up my computer and cleaned it (turned off for a long while, unplugged) using compressed air in a can followed by a specialized fluid for eletronic components (you know, the kind that sprays on and completely evaporates to leave no trace behind)

Well, the thing is, either a plastic clamp thing broke because of the fluid or it was allready broken and the spray just loosened it. Anyway, here's the result

It's hard to notice in the pictures but both the butterfly clamp (in one pic) and the metal support part prominently showing in the center of the pic (in the secod one)are both now completely loose. Is it anything I should worry seriously about? the heat sink below the fan seems to be secure enough, as weel as the fan itself... so exactly what where those pieces holding in place?
