Historical inacuracy....Political correctness?
Okay the other day I asked the differance Between European version and USA version. I found another differance, No swastikas. The bismark is naked! I hate PC thought police garbage although I understand that that mark is illegal in Deutschland. But I am not in Deutschland! So can anybody tell me how to get back my realistic, Historical Swastika's?
 No I am not a National Socialist but I do play one on t.v. |
Im pretty sure GWX2 (and most other supermods) add correct markings to the Bismark and all other ships.
If i remember right, stock sh3 had some wierd German flag that was looked more like an inverted Japanese flag (white circle on red background! ) If you want to stick with the stock game im sure someone can dig up the correct files for you to add proper markings (sadly they wouldnt let me install sh3 at work so i cant help at the moment!). |

The funny thing is that when the Bismarck made her famous and final sortie in the Atlantic in 1941, she did so without the big swastika marking on her foredeck. It was painted over in Bergen, Norway. (You don't wanna make ship identification too easy for the enemy)
The pictures Bob Ballard took of the Bismarck on the bottom did show a ghostly swastika on the foredeck, but that's because the seawater slowly ate away at the overlying paint over the decades. |

The flag of Germany '33-'45. |
It's not the "PC thought police", fella. Swastikas are illegal in Germany and Ubisoft wanted to release one game for every market.

LOL thought police big time! |
Simply delete both german.tga files in ...\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Textures\TLowRes or TNormal
(they are in one of those two!) To show Swastikas in Germany is allowed if the act serves to further civil enlightenment, to avert unconstitutional aims, to promote art or science, research or teaching, reporting about current historical events or similar purposes. For any kind of political use it's banned! |
Many European countries have put a ban on wearing a swastika in the public for obvious reasons, many people who suffered under the nazi regime are still alive and might be confronted again with signs they rather want to forget. However, on some occasions it's not strictly forbidden to display swastika's, things like reenactment shows, museums, military fairs and shows displaying military vehicels and material are in most cases set free from this ban. The idea behind it is not that they want to revive the swastika but rather place it in it's historical timeframe, I mean, what's a Stuka airplane without it's historical correct signs?? Either way, if you go to a museum/Military fair/... you know as a visitor that you can be confronted with offencive symbols, if you don't want that you simply have to stay away.
A few years back there was an argument in the European parlement for the lift of the ban on Nazi symbols but it never happened. In a way it's all quite hypocrite, if you wear a Nazi symbol or have a T-shirt with hitler on it you will be arrested and charged but on the other hand, if you wear a communist symbol or a T-shirt of Stalin nobody even complains, even after we know that Stalin was as worse (or even more worse) than Hitler in terms of crimes against humanity. I'm in no way a supporter of either sides, my interests are pure historical and while I enjoy the looks of a German uniform or the shape and looks of German tanks/u-boats/airplanes/... I never forget what they stood for in that time. |
Errr we have had the discussion here at least three billion times. No, wait, wasn't it four billion already?? :hmm:
But Freiwillige just wanted to ask for a mod that corrects that, not open it for the 4th billion first time :damn: , so more precise answers would be good  GWX of course corrects it, as NYGM, RUB and WAC do. Long ago it was also available as standalone mod, but the thread got moved to the archives and the download possibly deleted. If you want the file for standalone swastikas correction in the Bismarck, just PM me and I will mail it to you. |
I find it amazing (and alarming) that any country would ban the showing of any symbol. Critical to human growth is the freedom to believe & express belief in any concept, however evil or benign.
The United States has it's racial groups that have been mitigated to the tiny fringe. If they were "banned" as Nazism is in Europe, they could claim that their true numbers & influence were much wider than they are and they only appeared so small because of government intervention. Sorry to take an OT thread even more OT, but that's my .02 :) |
