Nice drawings. Is this really the first?

Holland A-1 design, 1901 (USA) [Chant, 1996]. This boat may be regarded as the first real submarine. It features diesel electric propulsion and has on board torpedo tubes. The life and works of John P. Holland, is outlined in [Morris, 1998

I thought the Hollands all had petrol's

I thought the first "war"-submarine was built by the Confed army during the war of secession ...
The first ever built Submarine was the Turtle built 1776 by David Bushnell
Durint the American Civil War the Confed army used handpowered "tubes" to get heavy explosive charges to ships.... etc.

Ive got a pic of an illustraion of a submarine from the 1500s !
It's a tapestry type of affair, Trouble is I can't find the original site i got it from so i can't post it here.
In short it was rather like a rowing boat wich had a canvass top cover sealed using a thick tar, with the holes for the oars blocked up with cloth and tar also.
It controlled it's depth with an air filled bladder which the ocupants would sit and place their feet upon, By aplying preasure or releasing it, they could increase or decrease their depth.
No idea if it actually worked but the picture quite clearly shows it underwater travelling along close to the bank of the river Thames with people walking along the shoreline.
Just wish I could find the site again.

Speaking of 'Holland'. ;) Didn't the Dutch invent the first submarine in the 17th century courtesy of Cornelius Drebbel? Basically two wooden boats joined together top to top with oars for propulsion.
