i was looking arround and their are quite a few people that made their own ships. and what i was wondering is what do you need to do that.

Are you speaking of skins (camo paint jobs)? Or of new 3-D ship models?

If you mean adding new ship models to SH3 then you need:

1: A 3d app like GMAX or Wings3d (free) or 3dsMax, Maya etc (painfully expensive)

2: Something like Photoshop or GIMP to make skins for your model.

3: Pack3d to add the model to sh3.

4: A hell of a lot of patience since all of the above will take ages and you`ll be pulling your hair out before the end.

Most of the tools that flakmonkey mentioned can be found (for free) on the "Mod Tools" tab of the below link. Good luck if you try. I considder our Modders as saints and how they do it is not within my brain cells.
