Silent hunter IV/U-Boat missions on vista

I'm getting back into sub sims after a LONG time,
Really long time, 688, sea wolf, silent service, silent hunter 1.

How does silent hunter IV and the U-boat expansion run on Vista?
I'll be running a pentium D 3.0ghz, zalman 9500
2 gig memory
nvidia 7600 GS 256 meg (not the best, I know)

I have a Vista 2ghz Core2Duo w/2gb RAM & 7600gs w/512mb, and with all the special effects filters clicked on, imagery is very choppy. I clicked most of 'em off and things sped up considerably.

Also, the villages / cities have more detail and navigating 'round ports causes framerates to drop. You have a faster processor that might make a difference. Add more RAM to the 7600 to help out.

If you set up a great screenie, hit ESC, click on all the filters, then resume and take the shot. Just remember what filters you had clicked off before you click 'em all on.

SH4 runs flawlessly with all bells and whistles max'ed out on my Rig. With VISTA, install SH4 (and any other similar Games/programs) into a folder other than C:\Program Files

ASUS P5N32-E
Dual core E6700 Cpu
2GB OCZ PC2 8800 (1100Mhz) RAM
BFG 8800GTX Graphics card 768MB
Audigy2 ZS
4 Seagate 400GB hard drives in a 0+1 RAID array
24" Widescreen LCD Monitor 1920X1200 native resolution
Windows VISTA 32bit

Running Vista x64 for almost one year without problems. SH4 (and addon) runs perfectly fine at max settings, and no problems with mods/UAC if you follow Doolittle81's suggestions.

Your configuration may indeed suffer a bit, but only way to find out is try :)

It runs like utter crap on my box after i upgraded to vista. The game is fine, untill something blows up real good. When that happens, my rig just doesn't seem to be able to cope. Either the screen blacks out for a bit, or the game crashes. Heck I've even had my PC do cold reboots after hitting a cruisers' ammo magazines. This utterly devastates the game for me

Running Trigger Maru Overhaul and 1.5 on a core2duo6600, gforce 8800GTS320 and audigy rig.

Runs like a dream for me, running Trigger Maru Overhaul and 1.5 on a quad core 3.2GHZ, 4GB 800mhz RAM, 2x 8800GTX in SLI, 2x 500GB SATA HDDs, 1000whz ultra cool psu with Vista 32bit.
I DID have some graphics driver issues with the 8800s in SLI about 8 months ago, but other then that my system has been really reliable and runs perfectly, unlike my old XP system! :damn:

Well... I just had the mogami in the torpedo training blow up without rebooting the box... What i did was, i turned off the IDE controller that's on the mainboard in the bios setup menu, and i turned off vsync in sh4. That controller has given me grief before, and i'll just turn it on again when i need it, which is seldom. I hope this is a definitive fix. the mainboard is an asus P5K

It's the RAM folks, bring up your RAM usage before and while the game is running.

Vista on IDLE eats up over 1 gig of RAM just to sit there and look pretty, it's awful (I know, I'm using Vista 64 with 4 gigs of RAM).

After I kick up SH4 I regularly watch my ram usage go into 60%, running stock 1.4 game. Granted, I have EVERYTHING turned to max, and the game never stutters, but I can't even imagine running SH4 with 2 gigs of RAM...

During my initial set up (Vista 64 won't boot if you have more then 3 gigs, I think, theres a stupid hotfix I needed to apply first), just running Vista on 2 gigs wasn't pleasant...running a graphics heavy game on it will probably be pretty slow.

It'll run, but you'll need to turn as much off in the bells department as possible, and it'll probably still chug in places, but that's because the OS is eating half your RAM just to sit there

A good GPU will help obviously.

4 gigs of RAM on a 32 bit OS? Isn't it not using all of the RAM?

Valantine 04-15-08 12:38 PM

Nope, my idle is just over 512mb as I have cut some of the pretty crap that I don't use. It runs perfectly for me. I initially had some problems with it only using 3gb but I fixed it with a simple bios fix so now it runs all 4gb with no problems.

On my 64bit Vista machine though I have nothing but problems with games, same spec just different OS, yet nothing wants to run properly - as such that is the "work" machine now and my 32bit is my games baby!

Khourieat 04-15-08 01:45 PM

That's strange, I remember in my undergrad CS days mention that a 32 bit OS wouldn't be able to make use of the RAM because it can't address it all.

I wonder how that is possible, and if it's actually using that RAM rather then just recognizing that you have that much.

I haven't had any issue yet, although SH4 and WoW are the only games I've tried running on it so far, I don't generally play computer games.

In my experience, SH4 up to v1.4 runs fine on my Vista/NVIDIA 8800 GTS machine. Now, once I installed U-Boat Missions (v1.5), the game crashes randomly when a torpedo hits a ship.

Hiya's,
A slight topic ressurection but heck saves another thread from being made .........

I have a dualboot XP Pro on one Drive Vista Ultimate x64 on another

Here's specs so it may help someone help me with my problem lol .......

Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU
Abit IP35 Pro (latest 16 bios)
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz
4x2gig G-Skill DDR2 8500pk
Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3
Samsung SH-S203D 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter
Samsung SH-S203NBEBN 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter
1x Western Digital WD2500KS Sata 250gig
2x Western Digital WD500AAKS Sata 500gig
1x MAXTOR 6Y120M0 Sata 120gig
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 Sound Card - Retail
Logitech G15 Keyboard rev2
Logitech MX518 Mouse
Swiftech H2O-220 Apex Ultra Watercooling Kit

Now in Vista (x64) i have games eg: COD4/Crysis and they work fine

I have XP Pro on another drive solely as i can't get SH4 1.5 to run on my vista x64

This is what i want to remedy if i can lol

I install SH4 to the add-on 1.5 in a folder i named games on vista x64 C:

Now everytime i get an explosion eg: torpedo training, Screen goes blank/locks up forcing me to hit pc reset button

I thought i had pinned the problem down to using the AA settings in Nvidia control panel eg: If i used manual settings of AA @ 4x i got the explosion lockup

Seems i can get this if i leave Nvidia on auto where it uses no AA at all

So anyone with a similar setup (gts/soundcard/and of course Vista x64) help me on my quest for SH4 1.5 on my rig

If your using Vista x64 (skwasjer i hope you read this lol) and have 1.5 running fine and are using nvidia cards any chance of a quick card driver revision/settings in control panel etc etc

Hope it makes sense

Many Thanks

Ciao

...

From a post I made in another thread about my experience/testing with SH4 1.5's CTD's and BSODs:

VISTA(32 bit) + 8800GTX + NVidia Driver of choice + Pacific Environment MOD + SH4 1.4 = Smooth running of SH4

VISTA(32 bit) + 8800GTX + NVidia Driver of choice + Pacific Environment MOD + SH4 1.5 = BSOD

VISTA(32 bit) + 8800GTX + NVidia Driver of choice + W_Clear's Environment MOD + SH4 1.5 = Smooth running of 1.5 if "Post Processing" and "Texture High" options are turned OFF.

Logically, the parameter which changed was, by definition, SH4 1.5. That is why the Romanian developers are best positioned to compare SH4 1.5 to 1.4 to identify/know what files or engine 'code' was changed. It would seem to me that the developers/programmers could, therefore, very likely isolate the probable cause of the BSODs in a matter of merely a few hours.

My Rig:
ASUS P5N32-E SLI
Dual core E6700 Cpu
2GB OCZ PC2 8800 (1100Mhz) RAM
BFG 8800GTX w/768MB Graphics card
Audigy2 ZS
4 Seagate 400GB hard drives in a 0+1 RAID array
Plextor PX-800A
Samsung SyncMaster 244T 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor 1920X1200 native resolution
Windows VISTA 32bit

Heya Doolittle,

Well with this ammo you've provided i am going to try and see what's causing a problem

Many Thanks
