GWX how do you auto identify ship type?

I cant seem to get my WO to automatically identify ships. What exactly do you do, its really annoying id like to not have to spend time flippin through the book. I look through my attack scope lock the ship and then hit ship on the notebook and nothing happens. What am I doing wrong? Explain it to me like im an idiot. Does playing on full realism effect this?

I think this was in another thread, but you can open the recognition manual on the right page instantly by clicking on the word 'SHIP;' in the uzo or periscope view. I'd confirm that but I'm at work and they won't let me dowmload GWX on this computer.
