Dogfights?

Has anyone witnessed any aerial combat while on patrol? I don't think I've even seen one allied aircraft.

I've never seen a dogfight, but wouldn't that be great to witness a p-38 or Corsair or something tangling with a zero? The only allied aircraft I've seen were cruising around Pearl, and sitting atop US carriers...

We need to see some Black Sheep Squadron action going on. If an Allied pilot lands in the water near your boat, he should be available for rescue without having to wait for orders to do so.

IIRC if you play the Midway mission (stock) you can watch the allied planes bomb the Japanese carriers. Eventually, all the planes are shot down and it's up to you to destroy the carriers. I believe the Japanese carriers spawn fighters, so you should be able to see combat.

I have seen something close to air combat. In some rescue missions there are waves of both enemy and friendly groups pass over. When watching the map and seeing a group of US planes pass over an enemy plane, the result was an enemy plane in the water. Didn't actually SEE the fight.
All the friendly planes in the water seemed to have no relation to combat (but not certain) with US planes dropping into the water all around for no apparent reason other than to satisfy the mission objective.

it would bee cool to add this, even allow planes to be called to shoot off attackers!

Cool idea- it'd be great to have something like SH and IL-2 be able to play together nicely some day. Different engines and all I know, but to have all the elements together like that would add many days ( if not years) of exploring :yep:

For that extra touch of realism add the odd chance that even friendly planes will mistake you for an enemy sub and attack. Sadly, not an uncommon occurance given poor inter-service communications during the war's early years.
