[REL] Historical Chart

The map seen at the chart tables always bugged me, because neither the stock one nor OakGroove's were proper nautical charts. So, I went and found this great site where I found some excellent, high-quality scans of historical charts. This one here is of the Hawaiian coastline in 1942, and I think you'll agree it looks a lot better than the default. ;) The only bugger is the godawful texture mapping, because as you'll see part of the map gets cut off. Hopefully someday that can be rectified.

This mod will also be part of the next RFB release.

[TEC] make your own charts

for those that are interested, NOAA has a great site where you can download historic nautical charts freely (as posted above... Thanks LukeFF!) ==> http://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/his...rical_zoom.asp

i personally have been using these for home waters (scaling the original very large jpgs to dds compliant size, converting to dds, and saving as map_strategic.dds in textures/tnormal/tex)...

for areas where i can't find historic charts i like to approximate my own by using google earth images manipulated in photoshop (playing with desaturation, graphic pen filters, etc) to give the appearence of period hydrographic survey charts, and then pasting the adjusted image into a historic chart "template" so that the final dds also displays the border, scale info, etc.

my general practice is to keep my map_strategic.dds file updated for wherever i'm at in my patrol...

it's a simple little thing, but for me it does add a good bit to overall immersion!

cheers
