Question on realism of U-JAGD tools

I apologize if this has been addressed before, but I went through the threads and couldn't find it...

After playing SH3 for a few years the "old" way of targeting, I finally downloaded and installed some of the U-JAGD tools (using OLC's mod). My question is, how realistic are these? From reading a few books, I didn't see mention of any of these devices (which I imagine the circular slide-rules represent). Where these used as optical devices, do these represent hand-held devices, or are these "new" tools ? Thanks.

Here's a photo of the real thing:

In his thread Hitman provides the downloads and instructions to make a working model. I prefer the in-game one, but a lot of folks like the hands-on experience.

The rest of the periscope targetting tools are also accurate to the best of my knowledge. I personally prefer the simpler U-jagd Tools mod, mainly because it let's me keep using the 6 Dials-Simfeeling mod, which in turn gives a clean, uncluttered screen.

If you can read german, here's a website showing pictures and info on the equipment used on uboots. Particularly the optics. Otherwise, just look at the pictures.

HOWEVER!!! Someone reported he got a virus warning message when viewing that link. Others reported no problems, probably because they didn't use Internet Explorer or made sure it/their windows was fully updated. So be aware!!

Also search for message by Hitmann on this subject. He provided most if not all proofs of existance.

Thanks. I found that the Angriffsscheibe was realistic, but wasn't certain about the optics for determining range and AOB.

The rotating AOB tool was there, but didn't work exactly as in real life.

The optical markings are not that accurately presented. In fact the scope used a split prism, as portrayed in SH4 to measure angles. the whole thing could be rotated 90 degrees so that the angle subtended by both mastheight and target lenght could be measured. The whole thing was directly plugged into the AOB finder so that the answer was given to you. The AOB even came up as a numerical value in the scope view.

This was not possible for us to implement, so we opted to better enable manual angle calculation with the help of some extra marks.

I knew about the vertical prism, but wasn't aware it could have been rotated to get length. Very interesting!! Great job on this mod.
