A question about manual targetting

how is it possible to aim a torpedo at a particular part of the ship.

at present i am learning manual targetting but as i try to aim at the bow or stern whenever i lock scope it pulls to the center of the ship.

how can i 'hold' the aim where i want to...

i'm flumaxed.......?? :nope:

cheers

Once you have passed the data to the TDC and you are ready to fire you can shift your point of aim by UNLOCKING your view and placing the crosshairs on the different portion of the ship and then hitting fire.

aaaahhh.....

i see.

so this does not interfere with range or aob.

does the attack scope have to be at zero with u-boat alignment ?

m.thanks:up:

Nope...
However, you may want your gyro angle to be as close to 000 as possible. You achieve this by moving the aiming point accordingly. Most of the times that spot is just about 15-20 degrees port or starboard from your boat's bow.

Yeah!
Just ask... there are lots of clever people here! (not me!) And one of them always has the answer you're looking for!
Good hunting!

AOB is updated if you turn the scope. But range isn't. However if it is just turning the scope a little bit to point somewhere else on the hull it is not going to matter (their length is too small to make a difference). But if you wait a long time before firing, the target may be alot closer now so the range will be off. Although range doesn't matter when firing with a gyroangle between 350-010. Outside of that the torpedo needs to turn (alot) more and then the propper (short) range becomes important.

Setting the attackscope to 0 (and then setting AOB to the propper left/right 90 degrees) is only usefull if you got the course of the target from plotting on the map, and have your uboot pointed across the target's path. If you gave the TDC data through the notepad (stadimeter, AOB guess-timation, speed) then it is not needed. Unless you mean turning the scope until the 3 number dial under the notepad is zero. That is the gyro angle that I explained in the above paragraph.

you're a wizz, i cant keep up.

i have to go at this veeeerrrryyy slowly.

for some reason - genetic probably, i cant do or i find it very difficult holding this type of info in my head.

i hope , one day soon, to keep the basics up stairs and locked in !!

at the moment im getting a thrill hitting the first small tanker thats stationary on the torpedo range, practicing using the wheels in the attack scope RANGE - AOB - FIRE.....1...2...3....4.......EXPLODE !!

thanks for your help

I remember my first manual targeting kill. You never forget the first one.

Yes, my first will forever be in my memory, two hits from a two torp spread, she sank by the bow in 12 minutes. S.S. Belmoira was her name.

Well, the trick actually is to not keep this just in your head. Draw it out on paper, or play around with the attack-map imagining a dummy target passing by you. Fiddle around with the TDC input dials. One at a time though! I'll admit, I paid attention in math-class, or maybe have that nerdy-gene you are talking about (yeah, most definate  ). But my 'A-ha!' moments mostly come after using pencil, ruler and paper.
