Gyro Angles? Straight shots...
hi folks
I am trying to learn the ins and outs of manual targeting, and am practicing firing torps on a 'quick sight' basis as well for snapshots that dont have time to be setup properly. What is happening is this - when I am 'unlocked' from a target and tracking it between 350 and 15 degrees in the scope, and try to fire, I get a message 'unable to find solution' and I cant fire the torp. If I do lock on without going through the angle on bow and other manual calcs (position keeper has a range of zero and a neutral bearing) the torp runs about 200 feet then makes a sharp left turn and runs until it is out of fuel. So, my question is this: how to set a 'zero' gyro angle and be 'unlocked' on the target and still be able to fire a straight running, non-turning torpedo. Thats what is sometimes required for a snapshot, but i cant get the torps to run straight. thanks!! |
Are you clicking the red triangle on the stadimeter dial to give a bearing to the TDC?

Yes, I believe so - I will run through it again tonight and make certain of all steps taken -
the interesting thing is i *can* use the 'full' manual targeting procedure - 1>radar speed fixing 2> pk on 3> aob matchup with unit course 4> lock periscope 5> attack map -check impact point 6> update range and bearing this seems to work most of the time. But I am not sure how to 'abbreviate' this procedure when i have no time - just want a straight running torp. Which of the above actually 'sets' the course the torp will run? I guess thats all i really need - a way to 'turn off' the computer for quick snapshot attacks when an enemy is 90degree off my bow and crossing my gunsights. ' |
i dont know why your having a problem with a point and shoot type of shot, point and shoot is all i doo, and i never have a problem with bow torpedoes,
however, with the stern torpedoes, when i finally left the s-boats, when i tried to fire stern torps, i got the same message as you. this was perplexing because sh3 never had that problem before, so trying to find a solution to fire stern torpedoes in a point and shoot type of shot, i went to the hydrophone, with my bearing needle on 180, i pressed " send bearing to tdc, this was all i did, and when i fired the torpedo, it went straight out, like it was supposed to, so when you have that problem, go the hydrophone, and send bearing to tdc, that bearing being either 000, or 180, but you should never have to do this with bow torps, only stern torps look up the point and shoot thread, for shooting without tdc interfacing. good luck! now that pro football is over and the patriots lost,:down: :shifty: :roll: :damn: i may get back into posting here |
I don't know about stern shots, but with my S-boat i only ever fire straight ahead on a 000 gyro. (S-boats don't have rear tubes) To do that i simply made sure that the PK was OFF and that I never sent any data to the TDC. If i did a range reading, i read the range off the stadimeter without sending to TDC for example.

To set a zero gyro angle:
1) Make sure you have a bow tube selected. 2) Set the speed to zero and click the send to TDC button 3) Point the scope to zero bearing and click the send to TDC button. It doesn't matter what the range or AOB settings are. You can verify torpedo direction by looking at the bottom ship on the TDC. The arrow leaving the ship will point the way the torpedo will turn. After doing steps 1-3 it should point straight out the bow of the ship. Note that with an aft tube selected when this solution is in the TDC there will be no valid solution. Maybe that is why you are getting a "no solution" error. |
