The Defense Department has identified the five soldiers killed Jan. 28 when their vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device in Mosul, Iraq.
The soldiers were assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, Colo. They are:
• Sgt. James E. Craig, 26, of Hollywood, Calif.
• Staff Sgt. Gary W. Jeffries, 37, of Roscoe, Texas
• Spc. Evan A. Marshall, 21, of Athens, Ga.
• Pfc. Brandon A. Meyer, 20, of Orange, Calif.
• Pvt. Joshua A. R. Young, 21, of Riddle, Ore.
The soldiers were on patrol in Mosul when their vehicle was attacked, and survivors of the blast came under fire from a mosque, the Associated Press reported. The American and Iraqi soldiers engaged in a fierce gun battle with the insurgents, but when Iraqi troops entered the mosque the insurgents were gone.
The Jan. 28 attack was the deadliest on American forces since six soldiers were killed Jan. 9 in a booby-trapped house in Muqdadiyah, about 65 miles north of Baghdad.
Another attack from a mosque against Coalition forces.
There was a time when holy ground was suppose to be a sanctuary from warfare. I guess I shouldn't be suprised that rules of war don't apply to terrorists. The are after all, unlawful combatants.

Yes, but look at it from their perspective, they're fighting a holy battle in a holy region, being in a mosque doing 'allah's will' isnt a bad thing to them. Course, the fact the Americans returned fire at the mosque surprises me. a lot

Think you will find that, throughout history, war has never given places regarded as holy or of worship a special status. In war a good peice of cover or vantage point is just that regardless if its a church or a mosque or temple.
