New IXB / U123

I have the U123 for my new IXB. I went to uboat.net to check out her history and man did she have a good career! I hope I can do as well as her captains did. My question to the forum is this. On Uboat.net it says she was involved in operation drumbeat on the u.s. coast. I thought I had read in earlier topics that a IXB couldnt make it back to France from the US. Coastline? Or if you did you were literally running on fumes on the trip home. The IXC was better for the longer hauls. Can some people give some information on this.

IXB is correct U123 IIRC drew first blood in Drumbeat.

also Uboat net rates the IXB as the most succesful uboat
type. however that claim will draw arguments from people here
some with validity no less. but honestly if your driving a non modified
boat a IXB is a sweet ride.

I love my IXB,i patrol us coastal waters and even the caribbean with it after the USA joins the war. By setting speed at 9 knots(it only sees that speed on the calmest of calm seas) i can travel about 23,000 kilometers. I don't bother upgrading to the IXC or the IXD2 as the war progress either i wait untill the XXI becomes available WITH the snorkle radar warning in January 1945 if i live that long:huh:

I guess it takes awhile transitting the '' Pond " in real time. What tc do most people use. I usually try not to go above 512 surfaced, 1042 submerged. I guess the fuel problem isnt a problem or do you wait for the milk cows?

x128 until out of the aircraft envelope, then x1024 until again reaching the aircraft envelope.

In his memoirs Dönitz pointed out that the crews of the boats were so eager to get to the US coast that they made a lot of sacrifices suchs as take less water with them so these tanks could be used as fuel tanks. It went so far that Dönitz had to put a serious warning towards the commanders not to jeopardize the safety of the boat and her crew in order to get more range.

I'm in my 7th patrol in June of 1940 and just acquired a IXB prior to patrol 6. Is the hunting good off the US coast? I know i have to wait until after Dec. of 41 but i've never sailed to the US in prior flavors of GWX and was curious.

Tool.

I havent been to the U.S. Coast either, but I dont see why you have to wait till Dec7th. There should be some british ships in some u.s ports. I am just afraid of how much fuel I have left if I go up and down the coast to much.

Head over there at about 8 knots, you'll have plenty. Everytime I try and do it though, I get distracted by a large convoy on the way

Cheers,

I've only been state side once.

Within a few hours of boston harbour I got "Aircraft spotted herr..."interuppted by ...crash, bang, KABLOOOM...glug glug glug...

That finished off my longest career to date.(GWX1.3)

But I'm thinking of heading back there soon, in an IXB too.:o

Jimbuna 01-24-08 02:43 PM

Sounds like you could have been in enhanced tc :hmm:

Gaijin 01-29-08 01:24 PM

Nope,

Just bounced by 'enhanced' B24's...

Enhanced... being far far quicker, and deadlier then the british planes I was used to.

:dead:

LOL

I'been to US coast in GWX 1.3, chose a deep hole off Cape Hatteras and got a lot of tonnage. Did ok in the Caribbean. You must watch for those airplanes. :yep:

America truly is the promised land in this game!

No wonder they called it the second happy time, I've made a trip over there once or twice in my old VIIC from GWX 1.3
