encounter with US SUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i encountered a us gatoclass sub in my VIIC type german u-boat 50 miles SW of Brest. Is that historical? I am playing in a clan www.seedrache.webs.com.
We use GWX 2.0 and i ask myself and the community this simple question:
Is it normal that in GWX 2.0 we encounter a pacific fleet boat in european waters? IS THAT REALISM? i ask the developers of GWX is that realistic or just a joke from you guys? another thing. i struck the gato with one torpedo why DID IT NOT SINK??????? IS THAT REALISM? a SHAME FOR GWX 2.0

Nice way to ask a question.:nope:

I'll be surprised if you even get an answer.

with some imagination, why shouldnt the US have sent a sub to France? British subs did operate close to thew german ports (see Wolfgang Hirschfelds Diary of a U-Boat).

It did not sink? I have sunk some German subs (testing purposes with GWX 1.2) and it worked perfectly. don't see why there should be a prob with 2.0. One torpedo was not enough maybe, these US boats were pretty large compared to German / British ones.

P.S. Comments about GWX ignored. Personally I would rejoice if I encountered an US sub, because it spices up the game.

Because shame and manners cannot be taught or payed for here is your answer
"The Gato class served mainly in the Pacific ocean but they did operate from the Caribbean and the Atlantic for short periods of time. In the latter case, in support of TORCH, the allied landings in North Africa in 1942. " (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gato_class_submarine).

In the future I would suggest you be more careful with your choice of words as what you said is hurting quite a few people who put loads of hours for you to enjoy your game.

Ok that clears it up, US did use their subs near France. Maybe we never heard of it because there was not much to do for them anyway.

It's Ok mate. We don't bite here (a lot at least ;) :D ). Appology accepted. Now enjoy your game and send the Allies to the bottom of the sea :arrgh!:

For future reference I will tell you that the GWX Team has spent a lot of time researching the U-Boat war and everything you see in the game is as realistic and accurate as the game engine allows. Have a look through the manual as well. It's a great read and you will find loads of information about a number of side-issues concerning the U-Boat War (and not only).

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Its a good thing cooler heads answered before me.

I'll bet boneman didn't even realize that Japanese subs visited Bordeaux... and if I am not mistaken, one of them was even sunk in the Bay of Biscay.

Ah yes, the history everyone thinks they know vs. what real research will turn up. ;)

Submarine squadron 50 comprised of about 6 gato's and 1 sub tender, and operated out of roseneath or holy loch, in the UK. This SubRon was created around 9/42, and left the atlantic theater sometime on, or after 4/43. As the US submarine war goes, it was a very minor footnote, but they were there for about 7 or 8 months.

The USS Gunnel's first war patrol was part of Torch

You can read her patrol report - http://www.jmlavelle.com/gunnel/patrol1.htm

(a nightmare of engine problems btw, she came back to port on her backup, "dinky", engine)

As stated before the whole idea of GWX is to make the experience as realistic as possible (keeping the gaming aspect of the game as well). The ocean was full of ships at the time and especially close to the coast one could find loads of smaller ships like trawlers, fishing boats etc. That's why they're there. You can always sink them with your Flak guns and get some renown as well ;)

I havent sunk any gato or balao yet, only a nice schkuka in the blacke sea and a T class in the med, and both sank after one torpedo hit. I dont think that a sub could stand a torpedo hit and survive more than some minutes, even the 2500 ton fleet boats. In particular, USS Tang, was hit by one of his own torpedoes ( the last one:damn: !!!) in the after part, (not in the center of the hull), and managed to stay afloat for only about 5 minutes.

Where your torp exploded Boneman?:hmm: (in which part of the gato's hull?)
