Beware! The Belgian flag looks French from a distance!

Early '40-tracking a big freighter at night in the North Atlantic. Get close enough to see the flag, note the red white and blue vertical stripes, and let loose two fish. After she is sinking I zoom in with the camera and all of a sudden at close range I instead see red, yellow, and black! Oops! :o

Whoops! BDu will NOT be happy with you:nope:

I like to have grey, green and red sunken ship symbols on my map :smug:

BulSoldier 01-04-08 01:42 PM

Dont worry about the ship, they will thank you once invade Belgium :D

Ubåtskapten 01-04-08 02:14 PM

Made the same mistake in the dark, but in my case it was the white stripe that I saw actually was yellow when I it was too late :damn:
At least with my setup the flag colours looks a bit different during the dark hours since GWX 2.0.:hmm:

Not necessarily a bad thing, since it could not have been an easy task in RL, identifying the flag colours on a pitch black night.;)

You just don't want to know how many Norwegan ships I've sunk because their flags look British from a distance.

We have numerous accounts of they didn't take it too heavy... Lit or not lit, neutral or not... so don't worry.

I believe the colors are reversed depending on which side of the flag you are seeing?

In any event BDu was quite happy with me after I sank 3 big freighters and a British CL later in the patrol... :|\\

And has anyone else noticed that, since GWX2, it's much darker out there at night, and much harder to see flags from afar.

I accidentally sank a German ship off Norway at night in bad weather... It was darkened and I assumed it was British. But I like to think that I stopped to pick up the crew. Can you imagine the explaination?

"Well, you see, we couldn't ... see, see?"

Embarassing.

Don't forget Romania

The Romanian flag is Red, Yellow, and Blue it really looks French at night. Either way the renoun hit for a neutral isn't nearly as severe as sinking an Axis vessel. You get in deep with those. It seems to me I read that if you sink too many Axis ships your career is ended. The great thing about GWX is everything is more intense including dark cloudy moonless nights.

Do you mean in Real Life, or in Game?
I know the Emblems on the Turms are flipped,
as are the aircraft markings.
(Which are easily fixed)
So if the in-game flags suffer from this?
It's a fix that would be needed!

i bet the belgan crew wasn't happy either. they were just about to sit down to piping hot waffles and Dainishes! so much for neutrality.

You'll find the display of aircraft markings is a bit of a compromise. Ref went with the way that displayed the most markings correctly. Unfortunately, some markings in RL were mirrored (ie RAF tail markings) and some were flipped (ie Luftwaffe tail markings). Due to the need for generic marking objects to suit all nationalities, if you cater for one style, then you break the other. Unless you have a trick up your sleeve (wouldn't surprise me, LOL!), I don't think anything needs to be done with the aircraft marking objects as they work for the majority of countries.

Likewise flags, although as less flags were flipped in RL, it's less noticable. I think you'll find the confusion with difool2's comment is that he has described the flag as "he sees it", rather than in the context of hoist-to-fly. A British Ensign, for example, will look reversed depending on the side viewed, but the Union Jack will always be snuggled nicely in the upper hoist (mirrored). Flags in GWX2 are correctly mirrored (yes, I've now installed it!). Only the most anal of players (even moreso than me) would pick up that certain flags were mirrored when they should be flipped.
