Air raid on Darwin! WOW!

So I was stopped to refuel at Darwin (Sept 1943), and I picked up an air contact on my radar. Thinking it may be a friendly, I watched for it, but still got my flak gunners ready. All of the sudden, 20 or so more contacts appeared! "Oh crap! an air raid!", I was thinking, as I quickly called battlestations and headed for deeper water. I did some shooting at some of the planes, then dove after a "close call", and went to the external camera. I saw TONS of betty's bombing the crap out of the harbor, including sinking several American and Austrailan merchant ships. Lots of AA fire from the few military ships in the harbor, but unfortunatly no friendly aircraft.

I have to say, I have never seen anything like this, and just watching this was awsome. I was using RSRD and TM mods, BTW. Also, not sure that diving was what a real sub would have done, but since I wasn't exactly a formitable gun platform, I thought self preservation was the smart move. Did nail a wounded Betty heading away from the scene though.

Sounds like you were at the right place at the right time. Or is that the wrong place at the wrong time. Depends on how you look at it! Must have been very cool. This is the time you click the button to save the footage!

Darwin, Australia was bombed by Japanese land-based planes on 58 separate occasions between March 4, 1942 and November 12, 1943. Good to see it reflected in the game.

Wow, guess I was lucky (especially since I survived as well!). I thought Darwin was attacked during the war a few times, didn't know that many times though! Never seen that many planes at one time, so it was pretty cool.

omfg man can you please upload your save game somewhere? you're so lucky

I've recieved several messages to the effect that Japanese aircraft are over Darwin and to steer clear. Glad to hear it is a real event and not just some "fluff" to put atomosphere in the sim.

Sorry, didn't save with replay on (kicking myself for that, but I hate those huge save game files), so I don't think my save game would be of much use. I really wanted to reload from that point as well, to see how I would have fared if I decided to "fight it out" with the other warships. I was really happy I had the external camera on though! I think I probably would have joined some PT boats that were firing on the planes, as it would have at least gave me some protection!

I also made the mistake of dropping into Darwin on a mission. OMG! Japanese aircraft were thicker than wasps around a honey pot. They seemd to be giving me little attention, I got a little over confident that they were not after me and then got sunk by a few well placed bombs. I think my crew made it to the shore! End of that career anyway!! Certainly worth paying a visit to watch huge amounts of aerial activity.
