can`t get rid of pinging DD

I made a special mission in ME (just for trainining purposes), it is summer 1943, there is one veteran V&W, and me (VIIC, probably not equiped with anti-sonar coating). the DD is pretty close and has me tightly locked. I successfully evade his DC`s, but no way I can evade his pinging. I dove to 260 m (I cant get anywhere deeper, the boat starts to get damage under 260 m), I tried to change the course +-5, then +-10 degrees, then even +-90 degrees, I often changed the depth +-20m, then +-100m, I was launching decoys, tried silent running, engines off, running at full speed ... but everything was useless... the DD has always found me with his nasty pinging:huh: turning stern or bow in his direction doesnt help at all. what is wrong? I dont want to submerge and get him with torpedo, I just want to learn how to evade. and yes, I have a good timing (silent running, then full speed when the DD drops the DCs, then silent running again etc). I am really desperate, it takes hours and I cant get rid of him...

With engines stopped, he will find you where he left you. So that's useless. The only hope is, high speed when he's on top of you, go to one knot with some port or starboard rudder when DC stop exploding. Sometimes there is no escape. Patience.

I look at single missions as training scenarios for a career.:yep:

Yes, I know stopping engines is useless. I only tried it as a desperate solution, because some people said it helped them once. and what is the difference between 1 knot speed silent running and 2 knots speed silent running? I thought it is the RPM that reveals your position, and as long as it is under 100 no matter what speed you are traveling, you should be OK, or not?

It has evrything to do with noise if you go silent running all the men in the uboat will make less noise than when you have it off .
Hope this helps.

You may drop a bold.

Go to PD, observe DD! Stip you P out for seconds only! ASDIC doesn't work properly at PD.

Silent Running, 2 Kts. - keep your six showing! DD in P ~ 160° to 200°.

Whenever DD shows stern section (150 to 210) speed up. Slow down again to 2 Kts. when DD turns out.

Good luck!

Just surface and tell him to stop being a bully !:stare:

He'll listen to your complaint for about 2 seconds...

Then it'll take about 5 seconds for the DD crew to stop doing this:

:o :o :o....................... :rotfl:

And then the last thing you see will be a bunch of muzzle flashes or if you're very lucky you might just hear someone yelling "Mediiiic!" before the lights go out.....

The PD thing is not a bad idea though, but you'd better be having rough weather

If the water is deatch-calm then you will not get rid of him. I always check if he is running in circles and try to asses which side I will steer to to get always to the outside of the circle so I can easily offer the small profile towards him before sneaking away and be patient. :know:

My record is 7 hours real time trying to evade an escort. It is possible-just takes patience.

Precisely.....but sometimes I run out of patience (I generally keep a stern tube loaded for the trip home) and once I've observed his turning habits I open up the engines, pop up to PD and take a stern shot whilst he's turning. :arrgh!:

agreed...I have spent 3 hours trying to get rid of a problem child as well....

Yeah. I think my reccord was about seven hours of dodging one of those guys once. Those bullies !!! They're so mean sometimes !!!:stare:

IIRC if hes using ASDIC he won't be listening for you, as the AI restricts them to using one sensor at a time. So he can either use the hydrophone or his ASDIC... so if you hear PING PING go flank and do the zig zag to try to loose him, once the pinging stops go 1knt silent running. Its incredibly hard to give an escort the slip, especially if hes got your position nailed. Good luck though!

there's something else you can try. if yopu can determine the DDs direction of travel, just make you turn in the opposite direction. did that the other night and managed to sluip away while the DD was cr@pping where i wasn't
