lo all
finally bought the movie "das boot" and watched it last night...man it was uncomfortable and claustrophobic at times...then the final shocker when the RAF bomb the naval base when the boat is docked at the end!!!
after all that work and effort to be killed on shore was pretty gutting to watch!!

one question....was that ending historically accurate or was it artistic licence???

p.s cant wait for gwx 2.0.....if thats all i get for xmas...im happy!!

I believe it was a bit of an artistic license as the RAF bombers at the time didn't have the range to bomb La Rochelle...

It wasn't historically accurate, but there's a grain of truth to it. U96 was sunk in Wilhelmshaven harbour on 30th of march 1945 by the USAAF.

So the author just took a bit of artistic liberty.:know:

But still in the movie almost half of u96's crew got killed in real life nobody died. :) :know:

More to the point, in the book nobody died (well, it seems as though the captain does, but he did write two sequels). Also, in the many times I've watched it, I only count five dead...hardly half the crew.

Question for von hally: which version did you buy? If you haven't seen the 5-hour "Original, Uncut Version", you still haven't seen it.:rotfl:

I think director tried to be politically correct. It is still very difficult in Germany to produce anything about WWII with Germans shown as winners.

That, or Wolfgang Petersen was just trying to be faithful to the ending that Buchheim wrote for his novel. :-?

He wrote a sequal to dasboot?
