USAAF stole my tanker!

That's it:x, I'm going to shoot down the next flyboy who tries to steel a kill from me!:stare:

Had been partoling around the Bismark sea and had sunk a good number of ships!:D I was running down any contact and knocking them off with my deck gun (the ones that weren't armed to the teeth!)

I came across a medium tanker and started to lay a few rounds into her when I got a warning of an aircraft approaching, so I man the AA guns and prepare to hold the plane off while I finish the tanker off. The aircraft comes into visual range and it turns out to be friendly (yeah, and pigs fly!:-?), so I keep up the gunfire against the tanker.

The plane then attacks the tanker, missing it and almost hitting me with the second lot of bombs dropped!:nope: I put a couple more shells into the tanker and she goes down! But I get no credit!!!!:damn::damn::damn:

At least there was some compinsation, I came across two large tangers on the way home. After a long gun battle (both were armed!:-?) both took a trip to the sea floor!

Next time I'll shoot any aircraft down that becomes between me and my kill!

That sort of thing happens in SH3 all the time. Glad to see the Allies are not immune from target thieves!

I have never seen an alied flyboy but I think that the friendly AI should refrain from attacking surface ships. Just to make sure nobody gets mad... or if they miss and hit a friendly.

biosthetique 12-06-07 07:04 PM

Actually at that time they were US Navy or US Army. the USAAF was not created yet!...ooops!

Powerthighs 12-06-07 07:14 PM

I think USAAF is U.S. Army Air Force.

And it became so in June 1941, but plural - it's Air Forces.

1909: a division of the U.S. Signal Corps.
1921: U.S. Army Air Service.
1928: U.S. Army Air Corps.
1941: U.S. Army Air Forces.
1947: U.S. Air Force

Not true. The USAAF were created in June 1941.

Gargantou 12-06-07 07:45 PM

Yup, its pretty amazing actually, from being roughyl 300,000 people when they became the USAAF on June 20th 1941, during the war they eventually reached a total of 2.5 MILLION, that's quite a huge buildup.

Just for informations sake, the USAAF became the USAF after the "National Security Act" by President Truman, which was sometime during '47 I think..

biosthetique 12-07-07 02:16 PM

lol!
My bad!...
Yet, was it the USAAF? The US Navy? The Brits? The Australians? The New Zealanders? The Dutch? The Free French? A firendly fire from the Imperial Japanese Navy...
Could you describe the rondels?
We need to get to the bottom of that target stealing!...

Question :

Did you call in the contact or did the flyboys just show up ?

Odd, because I want friendly planes to intentionally attack your sub. "safety lanes" weren't safe :D .

Ya, I actually would want that to simulate communication problems. I have been reading Silent Victory and I just heard of something like this occuring; so I think that allied flyboys should have a chance to mistake you for a hostile and attack.

friendly fire

It would seem that this event accurately mirrors real life. In the heat of battle the chance of friendly fire will always be there. It was then, it still is now.

Wondered about the possibility of this happening when I watched two bombers fly past as I made my way up the Slot. Nice to see they'll attack targets they come across.
