compass in peri view

i read a german webpage about periscopes given by hitman (thanks for this nice page). german periscopes had a compass. i remember sh2, there was also a compass in the peri view. it would be a nice addition, because when observing a target and plotting its course on the navmap, you neednt to add together the relative bearing from your peri view to your course, you can use the true bearing from your scope view. that would be faster i think. is it possible to add such a compass like in sh2 in the peri view?

:hmm: Might have inadvertantly done that for you.

Will need to check.

Edit - Nope. At least I think not. You want a compass added to the periscope showing the bearing of the view/scope. Is that right?

So if the boat is heading 000 and your scope is viewing 090, you want the compass to show 090.

yes, and if i am looking to 350 and my course is 80, i want to read 70 degree in my periscope. it is a compass which shows the true north bearing directly in the ocularview. this wont be possible??? its a pity, because the kaleuns in ww2 had it...

I'm fairly sure that there was this dual compass (map & peri. view bearings displayed) in the GUI of SH2.
I figured this was removed in SH3 for more historical realism & challenge. Maybe not?

I don`t think its hard to make, the question is how to make it more or less right:ping:

this page deals with periscope equipment of german ww2 boats. they talk about a "peileinrichtung", which showed the true bearing in the ocular view.

if it is technically possible, why not implement this feature? why not copying the sh2 pattern?

That's what I'm talking about.

Thanks for finding that SH2 screen-shot, Jaeger!

Why would that be usefull? You need to shoot a torpedo from your bout and not from true north calculated. I never use true north.

It's still useful for plotting purposes. The Angriffscheibe, or attack disk, available with the U-jagd tools or the OLC-GUI which incorporates those tools, enables an easy conversion from relative bearing to true bearing.

When I was working on the U-jagd tools, i looked into the possiblity of modifying the bearing display to include the true periscope bearing, as well as relative bearing and additionally relative bearing from straight ahead in terms of Starboard and Port.

It proved difficult to change the bearing display as it has lots of hardcoded limitations, although i have since then thought of a workaround that would show the latter two displays, but not the compass bearing, which may well be incorporated into U-jagd 1.3.

If anyone has any good ideas...

very nice and big thanks for that try, i hope you get it. its a small step for more reality.

Does anyone have an actual image from inside a U-Boat for this to meet up with accurate periscopes of the time?

I also remember now that SH2 had this dual compass bearing on a collar-ring display at the UZO station.

The second drawing shows the upper part of the field of view the commander had when pushing his eye against the rubber cushion of the ocular.
