Problems with Messages.txt in 1.4
 

There is a bug where 1.4 does not process the messages in “messages.txt” that is in the Campaign directory correctly. Currently when the system DTG is equal to the message generation time, you will get an alert that a messages has been received, but when you go to look at the body of the message, it all it says “Message Content”. To make matters worse, once you receive the first corrupted message, you will not receive anymore messages that are supposed to be generated by messages.txt.

I’ve conducted analyzes of the problem and have determined what the problem is and how to correct it.

The following is the “Pearl Harbor” attack message:

@CINCPAC@^...^&Enemy attack on Pearl!&AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NOT DRILL X

When received the AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NOT DRILL X will not be displayed.

Review of messages.txt shows that there is a “format” for messages that is displayed on the first line of the file. i.e.

@FROM@ ^TO^ &TITLE& [INVOLVED SHIPS,INVOLVED SHIPS] Message content


The problems is that the [INVOLVED SHIPS,INVOLVED SHIPS] section is missing from the body of the message. All you have to do to get the messages to display is add [X] at the correct spot in the message. i.e.

@CINCPAC@^...^&Enemy attack on Pearl!&[X]AIR RAID PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NOT DRILL X

Just to clarify, is this an issue with the post patch message.txt itself, or has the way the game reads it changed, thereby needing an additional change in the messages.txt?

It's the way the game reads the message.txt file. The stock 1.4 messages.txt is the same that was in 1.3.

Ok thanks Lurker, you just saved me (and everyone else) a headache.

Note - this problem was not introduced by patch 1.4 - I experienced this problem for sure with 1.3, and perhaps before (it never bothered me before enough to worry about, so I can't remember exactly how far back I first saw this, but it was definitely happening with 1.3).

As I recall, it did seem to always happen with a message that (based on the date) I assumed was supposed to be about Pearl Harbor being attacked. The one new thing that might have been introduced with 1.4 is the mention of you not getting any further messages with content after that. That did not happen with me before - later messages would come in just fine, even after this "empty" one had shown up. So, that part may indeed be new with 1.4, but I haven't had a chance to play around enough with 1.4 to have this happen to me after the patch yet.

Which file do I use? I see two fixes. Currently I have installed the new RSRD 1.4 version

I think the second one AVG, just noticing this thread myself, playing stock currently :88),
waiting for the new Trigger.

Hm. So it's safe to assume that this fix can be applied to v1.3 as well...? I don't plan to install v1.4 until Leo OKs ROW and WernerSobe NSM (already grabbed the RSRDC update though).

The [USS Barb,USS Salmon,USS Cod,O-19] seem to be the 'involved ships'?

Yes you can do it that way if you want to. All I'm trying to do is to get to work in the first place
