Questions about Mark 14 torpedo

Using TM 1.65, I have a few questions about the early war Mark 14 torpedo in 1941 and 1942.

- The information tooltip states that its maximum range is 9,800 feet. However, the torpedo always stop and sink at 5-6,000 feet even when I set it to medium speed. How can I maximize its range to 9,800 feet?

- Can it be toggled to high speed, instead of medium speed? I can't seem to toggle it there.

- Except by disabling dud torpedoes, how can I decrease the chance of premature explosion?

Thanks!

The way it works

Slow speed maximizes its range? That is rather counter-intuitive...

It only has so much energy stored as fuel. Use more of the fuel sooner, torpedo moves faster, but its range is shortened becuase it burnt off all its fuel. Conserve the fuel, torpedo moves slower, but travels farther.

Its like gas mileage, and how having a lead foot is counter productive to MPG :88)
(I have a lead foot)

I just tried, and yes it worked!

Also, in High speed all my torpedoes explode prematurely even on Contact only, while two of my torpedoes reached a liner on slow speed.

Was it a fluke, or do Contact-only and/or Slow speed settings also increase the chance of the torpedo reaching its target?

At high speed there would be more pressure on the contact, so there would be more likelyhood of a premature detonation.

I prefer using Low/ Contact-only for firing.
As for prematures and duds, I didn't notice anything connected with those two.
I always get duds when i fire them in a range of 200m to target. Any explanations? :hmm:

Back up to 600-800 yards and try again. Give the torpedo time to arm. :)

Yeah, figured it's something like that. Thanks for the explanation!;)
