Dutch police arrest teenage online furniture thief

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Dutch police have made their first arrest of an online thief -- a 17-year-old accused of stealing virtual furniture from rooms in the Habbo Hotel -- a popular teenager networking Web site.
An Amsterdam police spokeswoman confirmed a report that the teenager was accused of stealing 4,000 euros (2,833 pounds) worth of virtual furniture by hacking into the accounts of other users.
Four other 15-year-olds have also been questioned in the case, which was instigated by the Web site. They are suspected of moving the stolen furniture into their own online hotel rooms.
Habbo users can create their own characters, decorate their own rooms and play a number of games, paying with Habbo Credits, which they have to buy with real cash.
Habbo Hotel is owned by Finnish Internet company Sulake which said last month it had reached 80 million registered users of its sites in 31 countries.

Sounds like a second life for people with no first lives.

Good job it weren't in a certain other country or the virtual ninjas would have been in there with their death stars

Wait a second...but how is he stealing anything? Theirs no Physical Objects being Stolen.

This is a bit over the top isn't it?

It's not as if they could go and sell it somewhere else is it? So in effect, they haven't actually stolen anything, merely moved 'it', so why not just move it back and ban them from the IP? I bet the taxpayers are thrilled in that country that their legal system is wasting money on arrests and prosecutions for that, cos obviously it's right up there with the great train robbery and the brinks mat heist.

Mind you, any country where people are prepared to spend nearly three thousand quid on some poorly-drawn isometric bitmap images deserves everything it gets. Let's hope the 'criminals' make a virtual bitmapped break for it and there is a virtual shoot out with the thought police in the hotel lobby, it would probably be a lot more exciting than conversing about where you have put your virtual sofa.

I had a go of that years ago and never understood why people would spend money on it. It was fun to chat with one of my friends who also had a go but I think we only logged on about twice and moved on.

Yup, I had about the same experience with that Second Life malarkey, a US friend told me she quite enjoyed it, so I gave it a shot. Couldn't see the attraction at all, kind of like an MMORPG but without the fighting and really bad framne rates, a company I work for actually has an office in that thing bizarrely. But I suspect some of the players of Second Life ought to worry about getting a first life before they try for a second one:rotfl:
