Question about course bearing
First I would just like to take this time and say hi to everybody and that I really like this game. Everybody on this fourm is very helpful. Now to my question. When you get a contact infomation and they say that a target is bearing 090. If I set a course for 090, would that point me to the target? Also I have the same question for the hydrophone. If I hear noise at 090, can I point my ship there and that will be where the sound come from? Thanks again for the help

Contacts in the game are reported as relative bearing, which is not the same as true bearing (or heading). If a target is reported at bearing 90, that means he is directly off to the right side of your sub. So you would have to turn your sub to the right 90 degrees to be facing the target. So if you sub is heading NW (course 315 degrees) and you get a contact at bearing 90, you would need to turn right to course 45 degrees (NE) to be facing the contact. Likewise, if your sub is heading E (course 90 degrees) and you get a contact at bearing 90, you would need to turn right to course 180 degrees (S) to be facing the contact. The same is true for the hydrophones. |
Those angles are relative to your boat's heading.. 90 is to your right, 180 behind, 270 to your left... Obviously, you can't use those values straight on the compass because the later is relative to the earth (the map).

I think I understand, so no matter which way I am facing if they tell me that a contact is bearing 090 that will always be to my right? Thanks for the help

A quickie way is to up periscope, turn the scope to the reported ship's heading while asking the helmsman to plot the new course, the "+" key me thinks.

My last mission I sunk 4 destroyers and 8 merchants ships. I plotted my intercept course and sonar, and because I understand bearing now I know what direction they was coming from. I still use auto aim, but my biggest problem was locating and intercepting convoys. Now with that out of the way I can focus on manual aiming now. When you take the time to learn how to play this game, you see how deep and fun this simulation is. I might not know how to drive a sub, but give me a direction and speed of a ship, and I can plot a course to intercept it. |
If the contact is straight ahead off your bow the angle is 0 (zero)
If it is directly to starbord it will be 90 Directly to port 270 Behind you 180 Bearings are relative to your current heading Pretty simple if a contact is called at 90 turn right 90 degrees and you will be heading straight at it. Of course those contacts are moving so adjust accordingly. |

When I first bought the game I was not taking the time to learn the in's and out. Now, I love, I am so hooked. The best thing is that you can take you time. When I want to speed things up I you the time compression, but I can also play at my own speed
