Cool! I was at the Air Force Museum at Dayton, Ohio a few years back. I got to touch the MiG-15 that was used by a defecting pilot during the Korean War.

I have another MiG-15 book, which was written by Russian authors, it has first hand interviews with the Soviet pilots that fought in Korea. It would make a great movie. It's interesting to read pilot accounts of fighting.

I'm curious if China or North Korea had any aces? They seem to be more like cannon fodder, if anything else.

You can read an interesting analysis of the 'defectors' MiG-15 in Chuck Yeager's autobiography: Yeager. It's an interesting read and he goes into quite some detail about the flight testing of the MiG in comparison to the F-86. Certainly recommend that book.

I was at an airshow once in the UK, I'm pretty sure it was the USAF's 50th anniversary show at RAF Fairford, where a MiG 15 put on a display, it looked seriously handy in comparison to the F-86, which also displayed there, and at one point that MiG came screaming over the airfield at such a rate of knots that all the other aircraft in the air got the hell out of its way!

:D Chock

I once saw a pair of those opponents engage in a mock dogfight at an airshow at West Wendover, Nevada. The guy flying the MiG was much the better pilot.

MiG-15: Better climb, bigger guns, less ammo.
F-86: Faster, better armor.

Yeah, I love the MiG, but it has some really bad quirks, such as no defroster in the canopy! Sure you can fly higher than a Saber, but what do you do when the canoy frosts over?:damn: The -15 sure was tough though! The Russian pilots would have the plane shot to pieces, then within a week- good as new!

Or how the eject lever was only on one side of the cockpit. Kind of a bad thing if your in a spin and pined to the other side of the cockpit. :o

Or how the 30mm (37mm ?) shells would fly over a target while the 20mm shells would fly under a target.

Still a fantastic plane!

I remember reading that Chuck Yeager took a F-86 up against a MiG-15 that had been captured and won then took the MiG up against the F-86 and won. Just goes to show that its the pilot and not the plane that makes the diffrence. :D

Funniest thing about Korea is that both sides claimed a 10:1 kill ratio
:rotfl:
This kind of proves that fighter pilots on all sides are pretty much the same...

I've seen a Mig-17 fly, but not a Mig-15. This whole story would make a great movie someday. (The Soviet units in Korea):hmm:

Great book, but there are no maps! It's hard to track where everybody is at w/o any maps.:dead:
