You will have to change 2 files in my documents/SHIV map.
But I don't know there names anymore.

I changed my Sargo to USS Spearfish.. so it's possible.

If nobody answers before tonight (european time), I will check it.
I am at work now.. bored and pressing + on my keypad..

Unforgently nothing is happening

As promised..

Create a new career in SH4, save it. Close game.
Then go to My Documents/SH4/data/cfg/SaveGames
Open the map 00000000 (when you did more patrols, change all maps).

Open ActiveUserPlayerUnits with notepad

[UserPlayerUnit 1]
ID=Sargo
NameDisplayable=Sargo
UnitName=USS Whatever (SS-190) <----- change this one to whatever you want
UpgradeClass=1
Type=Sargo

StartUserPlayerUnitMissionDateTime=1943-01-01 14:00:00
CurrentUserPlayerUnitMissionDateTime=1943-01-01 14:00:00

There's also a way to make sure you get the name and number of the sub you want when starting a new career, so you won't have to go through the save-game-then-change-files approach noted above. I've created a small JSGME-ready mod that I use to get the one I want (USS Pantherfish, SS-55 at the moment) - you can D/L it here:

http://files.filefront.com/Pantherfi.../fileinfo.html

Just check inside the files (you can open/edit them with Notepad) for the "USS Pantherfish" and "SS-55" references and change them to whatever name and number you want, install/activate your tweaked version of the mod via JSGME and start a career - you'll automatically be assigned the name and number you want right from the start of your career. You can always change it again next time if you want a different name/number, or simple de-activate it via JSGME if you want to go back to having the game assign them normally.

Enjoy!

Changing Sub Name

Can you use the mod after a patrol while in port without starting a new career or will you have to go in and change the individual files?

Not sure - never tried it. You might want to try it and see what happens, but I think that you would have to use the process Foofighters outlined if you wanted to change your boat name/numbers after you were already in the middle of a career. I think the mod's file changes only control what boat name/number gets assigned when you first get a boat, i.e., either at the start of a career or maybe also if you transfer/upgrade to a different sub mid-career. I think once you've been assigned a sub name/number and it's embedded in the saved game files, the game will keep drawing the name/number from those files instead of the ones in the mod.

Why would I do that I have the USS Drum on my third patrol with her

Well, if you like having the USS Drum, then you wouldn't do this. On the other hand, about the sixth time in a row that I got assigned the USS Salmon to start a career, I decided I'd like to try something different for a change. Whether it's your own fictional "pet" name (as in my current ride - the USS Pantherfish) you want, or you just want to be sure you get your favorite historic boat (such as the Drum, perhaps, in your case), this can be a good way to do it.

Like any other mod - nobody will force you to use it if you don't want to.

Good luck and good hunting!

Never new this was out there Panther, thanks.

Wasnt sure if I understood what to do if I was using this to pick any boat at the beginning of campaign. Just use the MOD enabler and it lets you pick any sub from the class you pick from the start up screen? :88)

Nah - I wish I were smart enough to do that and make it that easy. This doesn't change anything about the way the game decides which classes of subs are available at any given time or base location. The game will still present you with whatever choices of types/classes of subs it normally would without this mod. But no matter what type/class of sub you choose to start your career, the mod I created is hard-wired to assign you the USS Pantherfish (SS-55), 'cause that's the boat I wanted to use when I made the mod. If you enable the mod "as is" via JSGME, you will be assigned the USS Pantherfish (SS-55) every time you start a career, no matter what type/class of sub you select.

I assume that most people won't actually want to captain the Pantherfish :lol: , so all you have to do in order to make the game give you the particular boat name and number you want is to do the following (before you activate it with JSGME):
1. Using Notepad or other text file editor, open up each of the .cfg files in the mod and search for the "USS Pantherfish" and "SS-55" references and simply change them to whatever name and number you want, and save the changed files (the files are real short and this is very easy to do). You can also change the name of the parent mod folder to reflect the boat name you've chosen if you want, to help you keep it straight as to what you've done.

2. Activate the revised mod via JSGME.

3. Start a career in SH4 - the game should assign you to the boat name and number that you changed in the mod right from the start of your career, so all your log files, messages and stuff will have the desired name/number references right from the start.

Any time you decide you want to start a career with a different boat name/number, you can just repeat the process (either change the mod again, or create a copy of the mod and change the copy - that way you can have different versions of the mod with different boat names/numbers if you want - up to you).

Any time you decide you want to go back to letting the game assign you the historical names/numbers randomly, just deactivate the mod with JSGME and presto-chango, you're back to normal.

Hope you enjoy this little trick.

Good luck, and good hunting!

Yeah Baby! thanks again. Just upgraded the new rig with more power and an 8600 DDR3. FEAR THE BUNNY!

JimRat 11-02-07 01:39 PM

Is there a way to get the game to present you with a list of available boats after you have selected the class you want?
