7m on type IIB or VIIB is fine too. I tried both

Be aware that running that way also cuts your speed, or looking at it another way, increases your fuel comsumption. It's not a freebee ;)

Both, 6 meters and 7 meters are decks awash settings.

At seven meters, only your conning tower will be above surface. Whereas at 6 meters your main deck will we slightly above the surface.

On an IX type boat, with decks awash ,you cut your diving time by half.

Yup. You no longer need a calendar to measure your dive times, you can just use a standard 24 hour clock.

dont you mean 12 hour? digital had not been invented then.
has anyone managed to run decks awash while still having crew in the tower?

baggygreen 10-26-07 12:12 AM

Yes mate, thats the best part about it. Running on diesels, crew in the tower, but half the visibility!

What's really weird is that you can run decks awash even with crew manning the deck gun! In this case, both deck gun and crew are submerged. Guess the gunners should wear their scuba gear.

During my latest patrol I was running at decks awash (7 metre setting) in heavy seas. My engine room crew kept switching from diesels to electric motors and back again and surprisingly my watch crew stayed in the tower throughout.

Yup, military the world over have been using 24-hour clocks for a long time. That's why it's commonly referred to as "Military Time".:sunny:
