So, in SH4 who has witnessed or participated in a historic battle?
You know how it is, you get that FAX traffic and it says that enemy forces are expected at Midway any time. You're either all the way at Honshu and too far to make it . . . or you are actually at Midway and are waiting and waiting for the sh!t to hit the fan but nothing happens. Or maybe it's happening just outside of Midway but the entire Navy forgot to send a contact report with the approximate location of the battle. Same with the other historic events that you read about in the FAX traffic reports.
Then again, I've missed quite a few other obvious points about SH4 so maybe somebody can tell my what I'm doing wrong. How can I get in the middle of one of these whopper battles? Is it even possible? Or are these battle myths like the moon landings? |
If you're playing stock know the stock campaign is s**@ and most of those battles are not modelled properly or at all....gotta wait for the modders to build real campaigns like they did with SH3. The "Run Silent Run Deep" mod looks promising.

Also, tater has done some good stuff with his mod :yep:

I was leaving Pearl on June 2, 1942 and decided to head NW of Midway and look for the IJN carriers since I knew their approx. location in real life. Well midday on the 4th I spot friendly ships and sure enough it is a US task force built around a carrier. I note their heading, make some adjustments and then speed up time to allow them to pass when all of a sudden I get all of the collision sounds and the game gives me the death screen. When it zoomed out I saw that I had collided with the carrier. I guess I am lucky that I died because I have no idea what they would have done with me back at Pearl after that. I lost my boat, lost my crew and ripped a hole into a Yorktown class carrier during a major battle. I'm sure once news of this spread throughout Japan I would be given a medal. :damn:

Yup, I'm keeping my eye on that RSRDC mod. I'm just into a campaign in 1942 and don't want to mess it up, so I'll wait on RSRDC to move along a bit further.

I knocked off some Heavy Crusiers that were Attacking Leyte They were apart of the landings and I was partoling the area where they were going to land at. I sunk Three of the heavy Crusiers when they were sitting there ready to start to bombard the shore

Mine is weak on historical battles, frankly. RSRD is better for that by far. I started working on a few, but when I realized how poorly the game fought the units, I kind of abandoned the idea for the time being. Take Midway, for example, you need to have the ships go to the right places. You need air units to spawn and fly to targets and bomb the right ones. You then need to despawn the sunk ships. That means each sunk ship needs to be in its own group. Getting a formation like that to work is... Non-trivial.

Keeping an eye on RSRD progress and bug reports. In all this time I've not been able to sink up with ANY historic battle. If I manage to get there in time and location, the layer system conspired to slip me between the spawn dates.

I've been involved in a few hysterical battles, but no historical ones.:rotfl:

Many of the more important surface engagements are impossible since there are no ship-launched torpedoes.
The IJN without the type 93 torpedo is hard to grasp. tater |
