Sorry I thought you were asking for the tools that people use to mod.

Wings 3d is a good freeware program for making models. and Gimp is a good freeware program for repaining skins. And Pack3D is good for putting the models in to the game.Hope that helps:up:

If you can get your hands on that you'll be well on your way with regard to ship/plane modelling etc.

The basic tools required for modding SH3:

Graphics Editing Suite (able to edit/open/save TGA)
Model Editing (Wings/Maya/3ds Max)
Text Editing (notepad Duh!)
Hex Editing (google is your friend)
Pack3D (extraction/repack of Dat files)
Minitweaker (further val/sim etc editing)

That should just about cover the basics and if you need further instruction on how to use these tools, most of what you need is in this forum already.

The most important piece of information is: Work with backup copies of files.;)

I have 3d Studio Max 8, the software comes with tons of tutorials on the cds starting from the very basics to make your own masterpiece animation. Problem with this software is for me its like watching paint dry, i get bored of using it very quick. First couple of weeks i was keen but then the thrill died so to speak. I still load her up now and then and try out a tutorial and one time there i was playing around trying to design a uboat from some blueprints i found of the internet. But yes from my knowledge of using 3dmax you can do anything with this software. My goal was to create a CGA movie lol i think i went a bit way to far ahead of myself on that one :rotfl:

Now ive discovered ZBrush3 & lightwave software, just my thing not to mind boggling :)

Google also will bring up heaps of 3dmax tutorials some free some payto use
