bit of a natter about this and that

Hello all again. :D

Nobody was able to help me with my hydrophone problem (I can't get it to turn when I want to use it personally), so that's ok... I will get by.. somehow.

I downloaded the manual for SH2 to see if that might give me some clues. it doesn't, but what it does mention is thermo clines, and it says that my crew will alert me whenever we pass through one. Well... that has not been my experience. No-one has ever mentioned layers to me in SH3. Is that because I seldom get into combat situations or because I am always in the North Sea?

I have been trying to understand the game Dangerous Waters - I saw it going cheap, so I bought it. Gosh, hard to get into. If I persevere I might find a good game in there, though it can't beat SH3 for realism I think, and it might help me understand more about submarine warfare - that too goes on about thermal layers - so why have I not found any in SH3?.

The seas have been rough for DAYS on my present patrol, and my poor watch gets regularly dunked when I have to come up for batteries, but I haven't lost a man (yet). The only targets I have located so far are too far away, so I am about to sneak a bit closer to Harwich to see if I can find a convoy hugging the coast. Risky I know, and it will probably end in a watery death - but I can't go back to Kiel with nothing.....

Huskalar 09-29-07 05:06 AM

When you click somewhere on the hydrophone dial, the needle doesn't start to turn towards that point automaticly?

And there are thermal layers but you're just not notified when you pass through one.

She-Wolf 09-29-07 05:45 AM

no it doesn't! It used to, until about three real-time days ago...

ahh, so, if no-one tells me when I have passed through a thermal layer in SH3, how can I know and take advantage of it?? :hmm:

In that case I'm afraid that I'm not able to help you. But of course you can always re-install the game. But I can imagine that re-installing the game is not the option that you prefer the most.

Well, I guess that when the DD's above you can't ping you anymore, there is chance that's because you're in or under a thermal layer. Of course you don't know where you can find such a layer, but the deeper you go, the higher the chance you can take advantage of it. If you're using SH3 Commander the depth of thermal layers is randomly generated every time the game is started.

She-Wolf, if you're using a type IIA i had the same prob. HP wheel wouldn't turn, but it does in a VII i took command of, but for other reasons

She-Wolf 09-29-07 07:02 AM

Shark Bait, I am in that type u-boat, yes. Not had it happen before.

I could re-install the game as Huskalar suggests, but that means I have to reload GWX as well... still. I can do that! course I can!:D:D

Jimbuna 09-29-07 10:46 AM

BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!! :arrgh!:

;)

She-Wolf 09-29-07 10:50 AM

you mean I should say GGGRRRRR at it Jimbuna? ok... GGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRROOOWWWLLLL

nope, didn't work :D

NealT 09-29-07 11:05 AM

Just do not get so aggressive you smash the keyboard or the monitor...I am not sure you would appreciate the outcome :hmm:

She-Wolf 09-29-07 11:18 AM

hello Neal - no, tis ok, I love my pootah ( well, most of the time) and I will be nice to it. I shall try re-installing the game and GWX ... :)

Jimbuna 09-29-07 11:19 AM

The hydrophone wheel problem on the typeII is a stock problem.

As for thermal layers, what SH3 Commander actually does is limit the ability of the escorts sensors randomly, to simulate different thermal layer depths/conditions

If you do decide on a new install....permit me to give a few pointers

1. Uninstall SH3 via Windows' "Add/Remove programs"
2. Open Windows Explorer and:
- *delete* the folder where you had installed SH3
- *delete* the \My Documents\SH3 folder
3. Reinstall SH3
4. If your SH3 did not come with patch v1.4b already included, install patch v1.4b. Ensure you install the patch that corresponds to your copy of SH3 (Download/DVD/EMEA/US)
5. OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
6.Download into the SAME folder GWX.exe and the five .bin files. While there grab the v1.03 patch
7. Run GWX.exe and follow the installation prompts
8. Run GWX103.exe and follow the installation prompts
9. SH3 COMMANDER USERS: Download the GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander and unzip the contents DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder.

thank you Jimbuna, I will follow your instructs.

One thing I wonder about. When I first installed SH3 and GWX, I also had a folder from BigBoy ( where has he gone to?), something about December amendments was it? I still have that folder but can't remember where I am to put the contents. Can you advise please?

HW3 09-29-07 01:01 PM

The December 23 update is included in the 1.03 patch, so you do not need it anymore.

papa_smurf 09-29-07 02:10 PM

I've not had this problem with the type IIA - maybe I was lucky. (wish I had similar luck with my patrols, keep on having shoot-outs with aircraft BIG mistake:damn: )
