A Vista new user question...
In asking your patience, can anyone advise how to extract mods etc into SH3 using Vista OS ....I keep getting "access denied" or cannot find path etc.....
|
Some more details please.
Vista Edition - which one? File format you are extracting from .ZIP or .RAR - what? Your User Account - is it set for Administrative? Think about turning off User Account Control in the Control Panel under "Users". Also, WHERE are you extracting the file[s] to and with WHAT program? I have SH3 running the GWX 1.03 on my laptop and have had not a single problem! |
Asuming that you have already have JSGME installed, I unzip my mods into the Mod file using 7 zip. Do not know if that helps.
Also the Icon on the desktop Right Click the Icon and go to properties. Click the Compatability tab, and check that you have a tick in the Compatability Mode box and use the dropdown box and choose Windows XP. Abit further down that same page where it says Privilege level, make sure that you have that box tixed where it says run this programe as administrator. You have proberbly worked this out already. but that works for me, not sure that is the best way though.:) To be doubley sure I have done the same thing with JSGME. |
Simplest solution I've found is to just install SHIII somewhere (anywher) other then "program files". I have mine in my user area in a directory called "games". That way, no need to worry about running as admin, no need to change any compatibility settings, no messups by UAC with mods or patches - everything just runs as it always did under XP.
I'm running Vista Home Premium, 32-bit. -- Acer, Athlon 64x2 4800+ 2GB RAM, 400GB SATA HDD PNY GeForce 8500GT 512MB Samsung 216BW wide screen SHIII, GWX, Commander |

I use winrar do unzip my files. Basically I run it in Admin and open a zip. Select the folder of the mod you want.
Drag the mod folder from zip to the paste location either; C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\DATA or MODs Its should merge the files. If you get access denied then you are only a user with limited access to the root hardrive and Vista is very picky. Make sure your user level is admin. Should work I never had your problem unless I try using a program to save in the game folder. Vista doesn't allow that. You have to save your Zips in \User\Downloads\ then extracted it to abc. You should only turn off UAC if your the only user on the pc. Anyhow if you deactivate the UAC you might have to reinstall most of your programs if not a clean install. Program in the changed regestry may not work after off switch! |
As seafarer wrote, simply install SH3 (and any moddable game or the like) *outside* of the Program Files folder. Problem then be gone. ;) TBH I don't even think that Program Files is the appropriate place to install games, but that's my opinion - installing to a dedicated Games folder on a separate drive is much more logical to me.
What really blows me away is the number of Vista users that don't understand how their OS works. I recommend a quick read up on User Account Control, even if only through Wikipedia. FYI something I've posted numerous times before... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...73&postcount=6 It shows the few extra (read: vital) steps Vista users need to take when installing/uninstalling SH3 into Program Files. |
In UAC
In UAC I have admin checked, my name and system. Should I uncheck my name and system?

1. Set JGSME to "run as admin" in the advanced tab on the file properties. This works, but you have to "accept" every time you run it JGSME and other programs like SHIII Commander aren't covered. (you also have to extract the mod files someplace under C:\users\myuser first) -OR- 2. Change the permission on the SHIII folder. You only have to do this once and no dialogs will bother you anymore. All modding programs will work and you can uncompress files here as well.
WARNING: Don't apply this to any other folders. Changing permissions on SHIII is a bit of a security risk. A rogue program may scan Program Files looking for things to infect. If you did this to say "Adobe Acrobat" or another well known program you could be entering a world of pain. |
