attack or not

Ahoy Shipmates! This is my first patrol on SH3, I have only had the gme for a couple of weeks but I have to say what a fantastic sim it is! I did have a few doubts about buying it[ My dad served on Hms Limbourne and HMS Liverpool during WW2. He was torpedoed twice and sunk once, so he will be turning in his grave}. I just wanted to canvas opinion about when to attack ships in harbour. I have just sneaked into Loch Ewe but the only reasonable target at anchor is Fiji Light cruiser. If I attack then I will unleash hell on my boat and crew{ there are 3 anti sub ships in the area and the water is very shallow}. Should I just sneak away and find a nice easy merchantman? Or will I get heaps of renown for carrying out a daring raid in the Royal Navys back yard. If I survive the onslaught that is!

Hi, I'd say attack. I've done it and got away undetected.

Canovaro 09-11-07 08:35 AM

Don't do it. Better live on and attack easy targets that are more valuable to the Kriegsmarine.

I don't know about the realism level you play, but at higher levels, port raiding is very risky.

Well, your there yes?
A weapon unused, is a useless weapon. Even if in early war some of the torpedoes are turds. Try to get the best AOB you can, you may need to use impact pistols for midship impact as the shallows could prevent you from sending fish under her keel.

Welcome aboard btw.
You will most likely get a few standard responces about keeping out of shallow waters and harbours, or having to play the game a certain way etc. Try this; have some fun with the game and let yourself decide on what you want to do with it.

Welcome to the board wivs:up: since your there you might as well attack and get the harbour raiding bug out of your system;) then go and find some nice big merchants that unkle Karl sent you to sink in the first place:arrgh!:

Save the game first, then attack. You can then go back to the saved game and replay.

Wivs,

It's probably no surprise that the community is split on the issue. The key question is if you want to play the more realistic "dead is dead", or want to play this as a game and try out different scenarios for fun.

For the former, make your attack decision based on if risking the lives of your crew are worth the target. A destroyer or cruiser isn't worth as much, but a battleship or carrier (or a tanker or liberty ship) might be. Do you have an clear exit lane from the harbor? How proficient are you at shallow operations? How close is the nearest deep water? Can you fire from a distance? Is there a period where the ASW assets are turned away from you? How about weather and visibility (it's easier to escape in dark, stormy seas)? Can you wait outside the harbor for traffic?

If the latter, then save a game, and give it a go. Hey, Prien did it. Worst thing that happens is you reload and try a different approach the next time.

As for me, I'm the "dead is dead" conservative type. I have let some juicy targets go when the odds were against me, but then again, my boat and I are still in the fight.

Welcome aboard!

I would try to slip out more quietly than I went in. It is a tempting tatget, but the lives of your crew and the boat are worth a lot more. Plenty of good targets in open water. And a much better chance of survival. I'm not saying to avoid risk altogether, just make sure you have plenty of water under your keel, and full batteries first. Then attack relentlessly with cunning and skill.

Good Hunting, and have fun.
