Spontaneous death?!

Okay... this is my official WTF thread.

I am patrolling the east china sea. I am being buzzed occasionally by Nip aircraft. I took some hits but my damage control appear to have plugged every hole and patched everything back together. I'd say it was light to moderate damage.

I'm getting SD contacts and am at battle stations. I have the AA mount set with orders fire at will medium range. My best gunner is there.

I decide to take us to PD. We're there for roughly 60 seconds when I get a captain's worst call. PRESSURE HULL BREACH!!!

No way.

Boom. We bubble up and die.

WTF?!!!

I reload and check the hull for mines near us. Nothing. No aircraft. It's as if Horshima comes early on my boat.

There are no outward explosions or anything. Weird.

Experts... what happened to me?!!

My only though is that it was previous damage. It does not happen if I stay surfaced.

Your damage control only repairs damage that is repairable at sea. All damage is cumulative, however. So all those little attacks weakened the hull. The result of such "hitpoint" damage is to raise the crush depth of the boat. Once the crush depth is the surfaced depth, that's all she wrote, you sink. In your case, the crush depth was just below the surface someplace.

The game shows you that something is wrong---inside the boat you will see leaks, etc, even though the boat is "repaired." That's a serious warning!

If you don't see those after taking damage that you worry might be bad (a near DC or bomb, for example), make a test dive---when you see leaks inside, go up til they go away, and try not to go that deep again.

I wish somebody made a mod where it displayed the remaining hitpoints as a presentage.

If they do, they should mod the XO holding a tricorder to show how he gets his data for you.

That's been there since 1.3 - I'm surprised nobody noticed.

I just re-read all the patch readme info and all I could find was this:

5. Tuned the submarines damage model

No where else did it say anything about damage to the sub add-ons
I was aware of the orange (damage) vs. yellow (no damage) in the
crew slots but never saw it in the Damage Control section. I ran a
test where I took damage just to see. I did get a 3% damage reading
when it turned orange. I had to set the mission all the way to 1944 so
I could test this....

all it would have to be is a best guess from the XO. All I really want to know is if i dive to PD to avoid an aircraft am i going to die a very sudden death? And your not going to tell me that the captain would have a best guess from the XO and damage control party how much more his ship could take.

Never noticed that. hmm... I can see it now Adm. Lockwood reliving me of command because of missing the obvious

A bomb explodes somewhat close to the boat. A weld is weakened, but has not yet failed. When a certain pressure is applied, the weld will fail.

What does the XO and damage control party know? How much could they know?

(serious question)

Not saying that some concept of the hull damage would NEVER be known, but I am saying it is possible to be very hit or miss. Any system that tells you for sure is cheating, IMO.

Oh I agree with you, just not 100%. But it doesn't matter because we do have a "guage" telling us how our hull is doing. But your right how could the crew know when a weld is about to fail. They couldn't know. But do i think it should be instant death not really. At least give us a fighting chance, or a false sence of a chance.

I've only had this problem once, going past 100ft to avoid some DC but i was going to die anyways so it didnt bother me much.
