Mein Gott! What were those Schweinehunds at BDu thinking?

New career, Jul 1940, 2nd Flotilla.

Brand new sub and crew.

They send me to AM68.:damn:

To save you referencing your maps, that is smack dab in the center of the Irish Sea.

Has anyone else been sent there? Not exactly a safe place to patrol.

I considered not fulfilling my mission and just taking the renown hit, but I went ahead anyway. At least I got two merchants worth over 13,000 tons before they got me.:nope:

It's doable, but you have to stay on your toes. stay clear of ports, even if tempted. I hug the Irish coast and dive at the first sight of trouble. You be rewarded with plenty of contacts, just be carful of Irish shipping.

If you knock off a single merchant you may want to put some distance between you and the sinking as the patrols near by will be after you.

I had same orders in another carreer. Was in almost constant sound contact with destroyers. Managed to sink one large merchie then move off south. Bad weather helped. If you are careful, should have no major probs. Just be quiet. Surface only at night. Stay close to Irish coast.

I'd lose those orders if I were you.:p

No pain, no gain

Stay at slow speed submerged during daylight and only surface at night. Be very careful. It's very well possible.

I read this post yesterday, shortly after I was assigned the same grid. Losts of easy targets up there.

You should be able to stay submerged for 24hours.....then move off to another area :arrgh!:

Well, my own hubris did me in.

I took out a small merchant, at "nighttime" (it's July, so it was twilight), in light fog, in 100 meters of water, after a stern chase. An armed tug immediately responded to the scene. I was creeping away undetected when I heard another merchant closing in. Since I had used three fish taking out the merchant, I secured from general quarters and started loading torps for the next merchant. I guess the tug heard me because soon he was dropping DCs on me, destroyed my elecs, and that was all she wrote for me.

This is one of the most common causes of death......'mans greed for more tonnage'
