Nobody wants to sign up, possibly related to Iraq/Afghanistan.

And it's "death throes".

And if they did sign up, would they actually get anything for them to use against the enemy? :hmm:

We seem to be meeting our recruitment goals over here. Strange that you wouldn't over there. The wars actually have increased recruitment since action seems to attract the young, and boredom seems to drive them away.

It's often reprted that the US has great difficulties to meet it's recruitment goals, and is able to fulfill them only by having lowered the hurdles which recruits have to pass to be accepted as service-ready.

In other words: you do not get the quality of men and characters as before.

Morals and command structures will reflect that decrease in quality sooner or later. If it hasn't already started.

Australia managed to excced the quota of new enlistments this year. Better pay was one of the reasons. I wonder if any military people from the U.K. would be interested in a transfer down under? More sun, higher standard of living, more dangerous wildlife than you can poke a stick at.... Ooops! Forget the last point!

The difference is, the desk Jockey got RSI as a result of poor H&S standards at her work. i.e. it was her employers fault so they pay.

The para, however, was injured by enemy action. i.e. it was not his employer's fault so they do not pay.

If the para could prove that his employer (the army) knew about the land mine's location, but still told him to stand on it*; then assuming he won the case in court, he would receive far more than the desk jockey with RSI.

*or any other form of irrisponsibility like this.

The sad thing is Letum is right, I hear on the radio many are not signing up for another tour and just leaving the army and this is one of the reasons.

It's about time the law was changed to insure these people get a proper pay out and the care they need. They were set out there by our government Tony Blair who never payed his respects to those who came home in a body bags and Gordon Brown is doing the same thing.

Well, we can't pay out as if it where a compensation claim. That would mean paying out several times the UK's entire treasury!
They already get all the care they need on the NHS, a injury payment and a pension for the rest of their lives in addition to the usual state pension after the pension age. They are certainly not left neglected.

I don't think that trying to cover the injury and death that results from war with cash settlements is the ultimate solution. I don't think we can pay off our debt to our servicemen in anyway!



Whilst we are on the topic, here is an unjustice! Apperantly VC winners have "no strong ties" to the UK:

Visa Officers at the British Embassy in Kathmandu, Nepal, have rejected requests from British Army Gurkhas to come and settle in the United Kingdom. Those rejected have included Tul Bahadur Pun VC (a Gurkha who won the Victoria Cross in World War II) and Lance Corporal Gyanendra Rai (a Gurkha seriously wounded by Argentine artillery at Bluff Cove, in the Falkland Islands in 1982). British Visa Officers say that these brave Gurkhas do not have "strong ties" to the United Kingdom, despite years of service in the British Army. (And a bloody VC FFS!)
