K-Class Submarines

Someone was after information on K-Class submarines that the UK made near the end of WW1. I picked up a book which had a whole chapter on them, it makes for sacry reading (Because of the K Class 13 was never used as a sub designation again!)

The M class was based on the the design of the K class, which didn't help them in any way!:yep:

Someone asked me for info, but I can't find the old post. So, if your still looking drop me a PM or just reply:up:

Were'nt the K class boats those horrible steam powered contraptions which took too long to dive, had no combat success and sank with plenty of good seamen with little to no reason? Allso remember hearing a myth that it was common practice for the crew in forward compartments to call the crew in the rear compartments to confirm if both ends of the boat were indeed diving.

If you let me know his name I'll try and get you a photo of the gravestone/memorial next time I'm up there, if that's not too morbid.

PS - It's Gareloch

On the 29th of January 1917, just a week after seting 23.5 knts on her speed trial, she started on her final dive trial under the command of Godfrey Herbert. There were 80 men aboard her as well as Francis Goodhart, the captain designate of K14.

At 20 feet there was a report of flooding in the bolier room, and despite ballast blown and the 10 ton forward keel droped she sank to the sea bed 50 feet below.. 31 men drowned in flooding aft of the torpedo room.

Herbert and Goodhart both attempted to escape by the conning tower, Goodhart drwoned, but Herbert made it (He also escaped from the submarine D5 when she hit a mine, blowing him clear of the conning tower).

57 hours later they were able to rescue the remainder of the crew.

6 weeks later the sub was raised and renamed K22
