allied submarines

Hello, im new to subsim and i have a question:

Are there any allied submarines except your`s?

AirborneTD 08-09-07 12:13 PM

No, unfortunately. It would be nice to run into one occasionally heading to or from a patrol. Better yet, it would be cool to attack a convoy and watch other ships get torped by another friendly.

oh, thats sad. i wished to see allied submarines attacking convoys and task forces.

thanks for the quick reply.

Just like stock SH3 until GWX came along hopefully we will get a super mod in a year or two for SH4.

Ive spotted allied subs comming and goin from home port.

They are just surface 'traffic' though and not active participants.

It is not difficult to make allied submarines attacking convoys and task forces. What's difficult is to get a player arrive to the fight scene before the fight is over.

AI subs were in SH3 long before GWX came along.

As to SH4, it is even easier to introduce AI subs in the campaign. There is no need for a revision of the entire campaign files or having a supermod, the AI subs can come as a separate section which is easy to plug into any campaign.

Actually, if Allied subs can be made with an AI to act like subs, then
Japanese subs could be included too. It would make SH4 like an entirely
new game....

Sub vs Sub combat was extremely rare. In fact Im not sure that there were any documented instances.

Much more common were subs working in packs... everyone knows that I guess but the point is it would be very difficult to program this.

It definitely did occur, although not on a regular basis. Most of the accounts I have read from WW2 sub skippers specifically mentioned one of their biggest fears was of running on the surface, right by a submerged jap submarine in wait.

Of course, there is the US Batfish which sank 3 Japanese subs in 4 days. The US (I believe) only lost one sub (confirmed) to a Japanese sub but I believe sunk something like 22 of theirs.

Never saw one in two to three years before going GWX.

If you mean coding by SH4 devs of real AI for the subs, it is maybe yes. If you mean modding AI-subs in the game with present AI, it is no, it would not be difficult to do as I said above. A few methods of modding/scripting were discussed in the past for SH3 and in a clever way (at least in my opinion) it was implemented in NYGM.

They cannot fire torpedoes, however, correct?

Not real torpedoes but the torpedo attack can be simulated with exactly the same damage inflicted. Even if they could fire real torpedoes, the player would not be able to observe that in most of the cases because the fight would be over before the player arrival in the area.
