Carrier hit startled me

I "newbie guy" have been going through the single missions & trying to learn something from each scenario. Yesterday I was doing the one where you go after the Courgeous carrier. This was about my 5th attempt. I have hit it several times, but never sunk it. I had the flight deck awash on the port stern once, but it still ran off & left me... but yesterday I shot a bunch of 4, set to impact @ about 5m depth. After the shot and while I was making a 180 & heading out of dodge, one of the 4 hit the carrier at about a 30 degree angle from the port aft & just behind the Island area. The torp went "boom!" & I was just thinking.."BS, dang me! I blew it again"...Then a a very large & loud "BOOM" sent fire & deck parts sky high..
The secondary explosion actually startled me. Within 3 actual minutes it was gone...I couldn't believe it.
the DDs didn't even look for me..They just sailed around the debris & left me to my departure...
Kinda cool huh...

Its even cooler when you are firing at a ship in a convoy... and miss.... only for it to hit a ship farther into the convoy once you've written that torp off for "lost."

Regarding the dumdum carrier escorts... Ja, stock SH3 AI is asleep at the wheel LOL.

"Umm, Bob old chap... did you hear something?"

"Wot wot? No no! You must get more sleep Biff old chum. How can you expect to tally old Jerry with a bleary eye. Spot o' tea? Biscuit?"

"You know, I think you're right old man. I do believe I'll turn in for a few winks."

:arrgh!:

Unexpected "booms" are sometimes cool. Good job sinking her!

God I wish I had a screenshot now. I'd turn it into a "PWNED!" pic.

Anywho, welcome to the community, and good kill. :rotfl:

LOL :rotfl: :rotfl: , the thing is the stock AI really is like that. If you did that in GWX they would be after you for hours! Although saying that when I fired at a fleet carrier in GWX during the norwegian campaign and they were looking but never even got sonar contact on me. Sinking one in a set mission is good, but bagging one in a career is awesome.

I remember knocking a carrier off in 1940 in GWX, they kept after me for a day and a half! The fact I was in shallow water didn't help!

i did this single mission using an XXI. I fired off magnetic acoustics and the first 3 sunk it, but the funny part is that for the longest time the others were following the destroyers but wouldnt detonate. This was because of the draft difference between the carrier and destroyer. The torps were doing run after run but would never detonate.
