Holy Crap...
U-94, first patrol in Nov. '40.
Just loaded GWX. My first convoy was a big 'un, and managed to sneak in with decks awash. I spotted a whaling factory ship and dove to periscope. Sank her and two others, for 20,000 grt. Then one of those effing Black Swans came in and cleaned my clock. Smashed three of my tubes to kingdom come. I had to go home early, after he bashed me around a bit more. That S.O.B. could shoot! This mod is the cat's pajamas!! Kudos all around!! Returned home with 31.8% Hull. At least we got an extra bit in time in port, and we could get caught up on our drinking and fornicating. |

BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!! :arrgh!:
Enjoy the GWXperience  |
Speaking of hull damage, where do you find it at now in game? It used to be on the crew screen, but is no longer. What I do now id after being DC'd, I take her down slow to see how far I can take her.

You need SH3 Commander and then set the game options so that Hull damage shows. It will then be there in the crew screen.

Smokin': You can only guess at the damage. However, when the game loads, the lenght of time lights blink and sparks fly will give you an indication of the severity of the damage. |
When (if in my case), you get back to base you get a report that shows hull integrity as well as all the other metrics from the patrol.
Hmmm. Seems someone is a convert. Glad to see you enjoying the GWX experience HMCS! |
1940 is for kids :p :rotfl:
Try 1944 0r 45  |
Right on, U-123 was bombed and destroyed in St Nazaire not long ago...
Stupidly, I thought, cool! The Luftwaffe fly-by! I went down with guns blazing though :arrgh!: |
You can see how much hull integeraty you had by looking at the patrol report in SHIII commander. My first patrol in a XXI ended with ALL of my sensors destroyed, so fired 3 homing fish in a spread in an act of desperation and steamed back to Bergen. Turns out I ended the patrol with only 13% hull integrity!! :arrgh!: Those tommies won't get me again. Got the damage from a plane which bombed me while I had my schnorkal up. Does it show up on their radar or something???
|
Shnorkels are able to be detected by radar, while snorkelling its a good idea to raise you observation periscope too. But.... in reality, I don't think snorkelling is a good idea because you are a sitting duck, the plane it not spotted till the last moment and you don't have time to get deeper and you cant fight back as you are underwater.

This wasn't such a disadvantage for the Type XXI and XXIII boats, with their reasonable submerged speeds, but it severely limited the VII and IX boats. That is because instead of being able to travel at an average of 6 to 10 knots to their operation areas, they were limited to 2 or 3 knots, and up to 6 when snorting. That limits the amount of time they can spend 'on station', due to the limited amount of consumables (mainly food and water: Fuel wasn't really a problem, obviously) they could carry. Schnorkels were detectable by radar, however tests revealed that detection range was cut in half over a surfaced u-boat. The Kriegsmarine tried to reduce that range even further with anti-radar coatings, and to give adequate warning by placing RADAR detector antennas on the schnorkel. But I digress. Schnorkelling for only a fraction of the day and remaining on batteries the rest is probably the best strategy from a survival standpoint. I just wish you could assign a Watch Officer to periscope watch! |
Yes
GWX has late war sensors as an additional mod with radar sensors on top of the snorkel Read the manual  |

Yes, seriously, read the manual. Quite apart from it answering the majority of questions, it's a damn good read - very informative and interesting. The author is to be congratulated - good job!
