Reincarnation is PITA

Once upon a time I was a happy Kaleun. I didn't really appreciate how good life was until depth charges dispatched me to Vallhalla.

You get issued a new boat and a NEW crew. The new crew consists of a bunch of incompetent idiots. The hydrophone operator is deaf. The machinists can't keep the engines running. Torpedomen are the slowest layabouts in the kriegsmarine.

I was intercepting a convoy. When asked, the hydrophone man said there were no sound contacts. I looked through the scope to find the convoy nearly on top of me.

Next time I start a new carreer, I'm going to do 3 tour of the harbour patrols before going into combat.

Tripple grrrrr! :damn: :damn: :damn:

couldnt hurt to simulate a "training patrol" or two.

take them out to get their sea legs so to speak.

Jimbuna 07-21-07 05:59 PM

In future make sure the drinks cabinet is locked

With each tour of the harbour, you can pick up a speciality. With 3 of these "training" patrols you can have a machinist, a sonar man, and a damage control guy, plus everyone picks up a bit of experience points

I just take them to sea and hope they perform..............this is war, no time for training...

That's ffine, ffrom 1939 to about 1942, but affter that it becomes quite a bit harder to survive with a crew ffresh out of sub school.

Then again, that actually adds to the realism, doesn't it? Affter all, attrition took most of the experienced crews by the middle of the war, and those were around were split up amongst the boats that were being launched, and in training billets at the diffferent schools.

/Why yes, I happen to like the letter 'f'. Why?

Heibges 07-21-07 09:15 PM

If you wanted to, you could just assign the extra quals after one "harbor patrol" using SH3 Commander. Just drag and drop.

Jimbuna 07-22-07 06:00 AM

Ah...the fast track approach
Does very little for endurance and stamina though :hmm:

STEED 07-22-07 06:09 AM

Give yourself big renown and buy the best and from SH3C hand out there qualifications, bob is your uncle.

PS: Why the heck have I not tried that!!! :damn:

I find it more realistic having useless crew to sart off with, but after a few patrols I have experienced crew - especially my gunnery crew, and I start to rack up high tonnage patrols. So my advice is be patient, or do as Heibges suggest and 'cheat' a bit.

IMO far more satisfaction that way (the first bit, not the latter)

When you play DID, you lose a big investment in your crew. Thus, a bigger incentive to stay alive, more realism, more simulation, less arcade game. The more you stand to lose, the better the sim.

That's not cheating, I don't think it is very realistic to give out one specialization per patrol. :know:

And make sure Bernard is not assigned to the sonar compartment.
